Former YC moderator says
alcohol stand may be hypocrisy
The United Church of Canada's
position on alcohol use is open to
charges of hypocrisy, says the Very
Rev. Clarke MacDonald. former
moderator, in the July cover story of
The United Church Observer. "If total
abstinence is the safest and wisest
policy and we believe in wisdom, then
why aren't we practising it'.'". Mac-
Donald asks.
The cover story, written by senior
writer Mike Milne and treelance
writer Joanna Fairheart, examines
the personal and social costs of in-
creased alcohol consumption, and
asks how the church should respond.
As Fairheart and Milne piont out,
discussion of alcohol use is nothing
new for the United Church. As late as
the 1950's a major drive for
temperance was pushed by the
church and its leaders, and 200,000
people bought cards pledging the car-
rier to temperance. However, subse-
quent General Councils, the church's
highest authority, have stressed
moderation. rather than total
abstinence.
Milne and Fairheart report that at
United Church hospitals serving
isolated communities with largely
Native populations, alcohol abuse ac-
counts for half of the emergency ad-
missions., And alcohol abuse by clergy
is of concern, too. Southdown, an
alcohol rehabilitation centre outside
Toronto, was formed in 1966 to help
Roman Catholic priests, but now

Some church people have focused
their actions on "lifestyle" alcohol
advertising, lowering the legal limit
of alcohol in the bloodstream while
driving. or raising the legal drinking
age, but social acceptance of alcohol
has risen, and the number of non-
users has fallen. Says Clarke Mac-
Donald, "I realize that I'm a fast -
vanishing species.

Cast of Moose County
gets four curtain calls
An appreciative audience awarded
the cast four curtain calls and a stan-
ding ovation at the close of the
premiere performance of Moose
County, the second of five offerings at
this year's Blyth Festival.
Colleen Curan, creator of last
year's hit "Cake Walk", has focuss-
ed her comedic talents this time on
what happens when a farm wife laun-
ches a campaign against agricultural
chemicals in general, and a local
company's dangerous products in
particular.
This stance brings Theresa (Diana
Belshaw ) into direct conflict with
neighbouring Logan's mover and
shaker,Fern (Eleanor Yeoman ),who
has persuaded King Chemical Com-
pany to sponsor the town's annual
Moose Week celebrations, and tie

untimely end at the town dump.
The pillar of the community
threatens to get Theresa fired from
her teaching position .if she doesn't
back down. Husband Graeme (Peter
Smith) maintains he would spray
plutonium if it would kill off foxtail,
and daughter Kitty (Nancy Roberts)
desperately wants a starring role in
the Moose ceremony.
Theresa's childhood chum
( Marianne Mclsaac ), who has gone
on to bigger and better things in the
city, drops in to recuperate after los-
ing husband number two and her ex-
cellent job with an ad agency. Norah's
efforts to help her friend include
boycotts and blackmail. Alucrative
offer from the enemy complicates
matters.
Robert King as the unflappable vet
and family friend rounds out an ex-
cellent cast, who keep events flowing
from opening scene to upbeat ending.

The story is played out on a skilful-
ly designed set. The authentic squeak-
ing old screen door, the rain barrel.
the pots of red geraniums and the
bales of straw in front of the rustic
facade of the nearby barn are all
evocative of rural Ontario.
Lines like "Harrowsmith, the bible
of the granola set" and "I'm a
farmer, not a gardner", were greeted
with empathetic laughter.
