I ►v'as about 10 years old when my
big sister gave me an enchanting
book introducing me to a wonderful
new friend. It was "Anne of Green
Gables" by L. M. Montgomery, and
I fell in love with the brash young
ankle and nearly killing herself.
Of course. 1 enjoyed het- few
triumphs, too, like beating her arch
enemy, gilt ert Blythe, and heading
the class, and being chosen the stu-
dent to recite at a special concert in

want to be good but. as she often
moaned. she was "an afflicted mor-
tal." doomed to bring catastrophe on
her own head.
My eyes devoured the pages and
my heart ached when the mother of
her best friend, Diana, forbade them
to see each other after Anne had in-
nocently pressed three tumblersful of
three year old currant wine on Diana.
and sent her home tipsy. Her distress
and mortification were mine when
she discovered she had mistakenly

the special cake she baked for the new

The June Meeting of the Women's
Ministries of the Pentecostal Taber-
nacle was held at the home of Mrs.
Jean Triebner with 14 members
present.
The meeting was opened by singing
hymns and prayer was offered by
Mrs. Ada Triebner. -
The roll call was answered with
vettses of Scripture containing the
word "Delight". A couple of choruses
were then sung. The minutes of the
last meeting were read by Mrs. Ada
Triebner. The financial report was
read by Mrs. Mary Blanchard. The
Missionary reading was given by
Mrs. Ella Tinney.
A special number entitled "Cindy"
was read by Mrs. Estrella Finkbeiner
also a couple of poems.
The message 'of the afternoon was
given by Mrs. Shirley Prouty. Her
theme centred around the scripture
"Fret not thyself because of evil
doers".
We can trust God for provision
knowing that he that winneth souls is
wise. Prayer time followed with each
member participating. The ladies en-
Royed a delicious meal given by Mrs.
ipa 'Pinney and Mrs. Shirley Prouty
assisted by the hostess.

While sharp tongued Marina scold-
ed and prodded, believing itwas a mor-
tal sin to spoil a child, Matthew quiet-
ly "put his oar in," condoned, en-
couraged and loved. Marilla also
believed fashionable clothes would
make Anne vain and dressed her in
plain, skimpy, dark frocks. So. it was
dear. understanding Matthew who
went out and bought Anne a dress
with "the gloss of silk...with dainty
(rills and shirrings...pintucked in the
most fashionable way.. with beautiful
puffed sleeves divided by rows and
shirring and bows of brown silk
ribbon."
I sobbed brokenly when Matthew
died near the end of the book, but I
was happy when Anne and handsome
Gilbert stopped being "best enemies"
and became "best friends".
About 15 years ago. I saw "Anne of
Green Gables" on the stage and it was
thrilling to see my Anne, Matthew
and Marilla come to life before my
very eyes. That chance came, again.
Saturday night, at the Huron Country
Playhouse at Grand Bend. and it was
just as much fun as ever.
A rollicking musical by Don Ilarron
and Norman Campbell. it pulls at
your heart strings and produces a
tear or two But it tickles your funny
a friend
bone, too, so when you leave, you
almost dance out of the theatre, hum-
ming one of the catchy tunes. In these
dark days. it's a soul lilting event. and
I've got tickets for my grandchildren.
because 1 know it will do them good.
So, it seems to me, if you've been.
or still are, a fan of 'Anne", or even
if you've never heard of her before.
you should get your tickets to this
most delightful and best known of all
Canadian musicals, now on the bill at
the Country Playhouse.
