Secondary teachers, staff ratify salary contracts
As students in Iluron County said
good-bye to school last week, the
teachers. secretaries and custodians
said so long to negotiations for
another year.
Both secondary and elementary
school teachers groups had their con-
tracts ratified last week. The Huron
County board of education. besides its
teacher groups approved agreements
with its secretaries and custodians at
a special meeting on June 25.
The agreements represent a 4.4
percent increase.across the board and
is within the board's 1984 budget pro-
jection. The total cost over the school
year is $25.5 million.
The following night, 170 of the 240
secondary school teachers in the'
county voted 93 percent in favor of the
collective agreement.
"I think its fair and reasonable set-
tlement and I expect the, board feels
the same." said secondary school
teacher negotiator Shirley Weary.
Just over a month ago, the secon-
dary schoolteachers overwhelming-
ly voted in favor of a strike. This set-
tlement, however, was reached after
two days of mediation on June 19 and
20. Those mediation sessions marked
the first meeting of the teachers and
board since the strike vote.
Mrs. Weary doesn't see any long
term effects from the strike vote. The
last time secondary school teachers
took a strike vote was in 1977 when
they actually did walk out.
"I don't think it (strike vote) will
damage the relationship between the
teachers and the board," said Mrs.
Weary. -
Personnel committee chairman
Graeme .Craig said the board was
searching for "consistency" in the
settlements of its four. major
. employee groups. - '
"Wewere looking for an agreement
that treated all employee groups the
same," said Mr. Craig.

Another woman who spoke up in
favour of the home. who identified
herself as Gray's secretary, was ask-
ed. "How much did they pay you to
say that?';
Gray and Herb Verheek, the past
president of the Association. con-
tinued to talk to the homeowners.
quoting statistics they said proved the
homes in the area would not decrease
in value, but eventually gave up.
"We've accomplished all we can at
this point. If anyone would Tike to con-
tact me to see the plans in a few days.
I'd be happy to speak to them." Gray
said.
After the meeting was adjourned,
several of the homeowners met in the
parking lot of the church to continue
their discussions. Some area
homeowners have put signs on their
lawns saying their homes are for sale.
tivity with the secondary school
teachers, Mr. Craig said he was con-
cerned about the strike vote.
"You're always concerned in a
strike vote. However•'as long as the
situation is neutralized is the impor-
tant result," he said.
The new secondary school teacher
contract results in -an average annual
salary of $43,250 for teachers and
$62,000 for pincipals.
The two-year agreement has a star-
ting salary of $20.800 and the top
figurb at $46,200. The agreement
resulted in a $75 per teacher increase
for the first year of the agreement and
a $1,500 across the board increase in
the second year.
The presidentof the Huron brapch
of the Federated Women Teachers'
Association of Ontario, Ila Mathers,
said over 85 percent of the 380 elemen-
tary school teachers voted in favor of
their 3.8 percent salary increase.
The big thing in their contract is the
expansion of their benefit package
which now will include an extended
health plan, increased life insurance
coverage and a reduction in long tem
disability premium rates.
"We were satisfied with the benefit
package. the dental plan in par-
ticular," said Mrs. Mathers.
She said the Huron elementary
school teachers are one of the last
teaching groups in the province to get
a dental plan. The school board pays
100 percent of the cost.
The secondary school -teachers
didn't get a new employee benefit
package. but received equal dollars
in their salary increase.
Elementary school leachers have
an average annual salary of 838,100 in
its one-year agreement. The
minimum salary is $17,500 up from
$16,880 andthe maximum is $45.400 up
from $43.730.
