lileniories revived
It was very interesting to tune in for a• portion of
the recent Sports Call Program on CFPL radio when
Gary Alan Price had as his guest former National
Hockey League linesman George Hayes.
Hayes, a native of Ingersoll can be remembered as
one of the biggest and strongest men ever to pull on a
striped sweater and he was very valuable in breaking
up fights.
His big league career was cut short when he and
NHL president Clarence Campbell and referee -in -chief
Carl Voss had some differences of opinion.
The end came when Hayes refused to take Camp-
bell's mandatory eye test for officials.
Hayes told the radio audience that the biggest brawl
he was ever involved in came during the 1961-62 season
on a Saturday night at Maple Leafs Gardens involving
the Leafs and the Chicago Black Hawks.
Two of the main combatants were the late Carl
Brewer of the Leafs and Chicago's Murray Balfour. The
referee was Frank Udvariandllayesand Matt Pavelich
were the linesmen: -
Four Toronto police officers came onto the ice to
help bring 'order back. Hayes said NHL rules did not
call for police help in case of an ice fight so the league
ordered an investigation to discover why policemen
were summoned apparently by Udvari.
Conn Smythe, then owner' of the. Leafs was very
upset. Udvari said he did not makeany call for help.
Hayes said it was finally discovered that Stafford
Snnythe was the culprit and that was the last time the
matter was brought up:
The former linesman, named Bill Eiinicki and
Murph Chamberlain as the hardest hitting forwards he
had ever seen and Black Jack Stewart as the toughest
defenceman -
He listed a fight between Ken Reardon and Cal
Gardner as one of the most vicious fights he had ever
witnessed.
Hayes, a supporter of the original: six style of
hockey said modern day players are -too offensively
minded. The only game he can recall when both teams
scored a lot of goals was back in the Iate 1940's when
. the Chicago Black Hawks edged the New York Rangers
9-8 with Doug and Max Bentley each scoring three
guals.
That was likely the first and last time\\fora brother
hat trick combination until recently when the Stasny
brothers turned up with the Quebec Nordiques and have
equalled that r,., t a few times.
Clarence 1p" Day was listed by Hayes as the
greatest coach •r in the National Hockey League. He
added; "Day ha e best conditioned teams and he was
fabulous in the 1 47 season when he combined seven
rookies, four of them defencemen with 'a bunch of
• veterans to win the Stanley Cup.
Next on the list of top coaches came Putsch Imlach,
Toe Blake and Tommy Ivan. Imlach was cited for ob-
taining. over the hill players like Red Kelly, Eddie
Litzenberger and Allan Stanley and getting a couple of
years of service out of them.
Lucan Cup a success.
The recent third annual Lucan Cup Challenge was
again a big success with 16 all star teams providing ex-
citing hockey action.
The organizing committee headed by president
Tom Hardy is to be congratulated in putting together
a fine competition. .
One of the moit.exciting-elements in the three day
event came in the semi-final game at noon Sunday when
Hoffy Construction of Windsor and Aurora tangled in
a close contest that required a shootout to decide a
winner.
In most shootouts we have seen in similar tour-
naments a decision has been made very quickly,. but,
net so in the Lucan Cup.'
. It took 34 shots before a winner was decided and
Hoffy declared the winner by an 8-7 score. The shots
were taken in a series of three for each team and it was
the fourth shot in the sixth set that decided the issue.
A new feature of the tourney this year was the
presentation of diamond rings to each player of the "A"
championship team and these are really valued by the
International Stick team of Toronto. 'they have con-
tacted tournament officials in an attempt to obtain some
additional mementoes of their victory.
More special events in future • •

thusiasts in the area are concerned.

ed by dance featuring the music fo Daybreak getting
underway at 9. p.m.

games than the other squads.
However, an. even greater
problem is the fact the Hawks
now take to the road for a
lengthy eight -game schedule
and they won't play a league
game in the friendly confines
of therec centre until
January 14.
During the long stretch,
they play twice in Seaforth
andin Mitchell and will need
at least a split in those games
to keep from falling behind in
the playoff battle. They also
have to play against the loop
leaders twice in Tavistock
and the other single games
are against the Lucan Irish
and Thedford Browns. '
The road trip commences
in Seaforth this Sunday with,
a 2:00 p.m. game in the
recently opened arena in that
community.
Come from behind
Most fans had counted the
Hawks out of the Sunday
night contest with the
southern leaders from Mt.
Brydges, but the Hawks sur-
prised them as they came up
with five goals overthe final
10 minutes to take a 6-5
margin. •
Mt. Brydges jumped into a
quick 2-0 lead in the first when
goalie Mike Tadgell was
beaten by a couple of "flukes"
and the Bulldogs continued to
dominate play through the
first two periods and by the
early stage of the third they
had built up a convincing 5-1
lead.
The Hawks then started to.
skate and took control IZf the
game: They scored at the 9:51
mark with a two-man advan-
tage and cut the margin to 5-3
only 15 seconds later with a
one-man advantage and pull-
ed to within a single goal
shortly after.
Then at the 17:42 mark Bill
Gloverevened the count and
Scott Brintnell scored the win-
ner with one second left on the
clock as they took a pass in
the slot from Mike Clark who
had carried the puck all the
way from his own end and
dumped it out on front of the
Mt. Brydges net with the fans
yelling at him to shoot as the
clock wound down.
Clark, who was victimized
on the Bulldogs' fifth goal
when he gave up the puck in
front of his own pet, was the
sparkplug for the thrilling
comeback as he scored once
and assisted on three other
goals.
Bill Glover was also back in
form with two goals and an
assist.
third period
Scoring single goals in ad-
dition to Brintnell were Dave
Jackson and Ed Willis. Tony
Underhill helped out on three
goals, while picking up one
assist each were Willis, Steve
Prout and Brintnell.
Tadgell ended up with 27
.saves, while Carruthers for
Mt. Brydges recorded 30.

champs opened up a 5-3 lead.

more in the second as they
fired a total of 45 shots at net -
minder Dave Rook.
Jamie Shipley scored four
times to lead the way, while
Geoff Edwards and Hugh
Dietrich contributed a pair
each. Singles were recorded
by Jeff Skinner and Al Craig.
Tony Jones scored twice
and had an assist for the
Hawks with the single goals
coming off the sticks of Ed
Willis and Mark
Vandergunst. Willis added
two assists and singles were
recorded by Jeff Rowe, Paul
Johnston and George Tomes.

added one short-handed
effort.
