An afternoon perfor- mance of Santa and the Space Sleigh will be held on Friday December 17 at 1;J0p.m. and another 'Monday evening December20 atJ:30 p.m. The junior and in- termediate grades will also. present "A Song for Christmas", the story of Silent Night, with. selections from the kindergarten and school choir. Everyone in the community is welcome to come and see these plays! Don't forget the Christmas turkey bingo tonight. (Wednesday December 15) in the Zurich arena at 8:00 p.m., sponsored by the Lions Club. Proceeds will go towards the children's Santa Claus Day free treats and film, on Satur- day afternoon December 18. The Institute ladies and five guests had an enjoyable after- noon at the Dominion Hotel on Monday. After a lovely din- ner, carols were sung with Margaret Westlake at the piano. Vera Thiel read a self - written story, I remember Christmas, Verlyn Fisher read two poems, Christmas Cookies and Christmas Story. . Joan Smith won the door prize. Bingo was played with the winners being Mildred Klopp, Josephine Dietrich, Kay Hay, Edith Hohner, Agnes 'Regier and Gerry Kane. During the business $50.00 was donated to the Huron Day Centre for the Homebound. The Zurich Community Choir have been busy during the past couple of months rehearsing three Christmas pieces and they are now going around to various places to sing, which I hear .is very good! On December 7 they performed at the United: Church in Dasliwood, then this past Sundaythey went to the Lutheran Church, Zurich, in the morning, to the Exeter Christian Reformed Church in the afternoon, and to the Blue Water Rest Home in the evening kit -their church ser- vice. The American -born and educat,'d Grand Bend resident gave a brief resume, punctuated by' personal observations, of some of the • p v interesting jobs she has held since becoming a Canadian citizen December 14, 1961. Mrs. Steele plunged into politics almost immediately. She attended the Liberal Na- tional Convention in 1966, worked for 'Paul Hellyer in the 1967 leadership conven- tion, and was London : West MP JedBuchanan's schedul- ing manager in 1968. Jan was the first t woman appointed to the board of referees of the Unemploy- ment Insurance Commission for southwestern Ontario in 1970.. While still holding this part-time job she chaired the task force of the status of women in 1971-72. travelling from St. John's to Vancouver to ascertain which of the Royal Commission 167 recon mendation were most rele- vant. The `task forcefound women were concerned about practical things like day care, • • B S pensions, ana equal pay for HD equal work. From 1973 , to 1975 Mrs. Steele was a member of the Immigration Appeal Board, with power to set aside legally -proper deportations on humanitarian grounds. "Any bureaucracy can make mistakes," she said; ' adding "that was a • fascinating business. It taught me a great deal about this country, how hard it is to get in legally, to stay in; and ob- tain citizenship" emphasizing . the word "legally". Jan Steele was reappointed to the UIC. board of referees. as chairman when she return- ed to this area in 1979. She told her audience that employers who contribute to the UIC through payment of their _employees' premiums should appear before the board if they are party to a dispute. Mrs. Grave Martin presided at the piano and accompanied the audiknce in singing Christmas carols. Santa visited with his pack of goodies and each resident received a gift. Following the program. a delicious lunch was served. We regret that Mrs. Valeda ('orriveau and Miss Eleanor Phimsteel are patients in St. Joseph's Hospital, London.
