sub -par teaching.
How bad is the situation?
The British did a recent in- .
depth study and concluded
that not less than 4 percent of
all teachers were delivering
below acceptable standards
and another three were
marginal in performance.
There is no reason to believe,
that a similar investigation
. here would show better
results.
Now that enrolment is
tapering off, teachers have
been dropped. Unfortunately
performance is not the
criterian for dismissal, but
length of tenure. So in de-
fiance of logic and concern for
the pupils, bright young
teachers may be booted while
older but inefficient staff have
to be retained.
Most, though not all of us
work better under pressure.
With the pressure removed by
Securing tenure, it is human
nature to let one's feet drag a
bit.
The most glaring example
I was personal witness to was
that of a teacher that was soir-
rational that every member
on the staff was aware of her
instability. Believe it or not
she was retained on the staff
until an ambulance called at
the school to carry her off. We
never saw her again but
heard she was committed to
an institution. That should
never have happened and
could not in a properly run
system.
Anothercase worth citing
was that of a very able.
Both school boards and
principals working together
badly need the power to
dismiss the incompetents.
There is an odd corollary to
this. Though the ineffective
teacher cannot be dismissed,
neither is there just provision
to bonus the superior teacher,
other than to kick him
upstairs into administration.
As often as not, really
superior teachers make poor

ever happens again he will
drop the remaining ten eggs
up and down the beautiful
store aisles one by one. The
manager's usual response is
that he only sells what they
send him.
Who are they? Most city
folks know an egg comes from
a hen, hens live on a farm,
farms are owned by farmers,
therefore, farmers are the
culprit. I know the eggs are
fresh when they leave the
farm or factory (my basic
training included many a wet
cow's tail across the face on
a rainy summer's night), the
questions are where do those
fresh eggs go between the
farm gate and the store
shelves, how long can they
stay in storage and still be
marked "Fresh Eggs"?
How are they marked when
the storage period is over the

limit, what happens to them?
Must confess .1 don't know and
1 am sure 99 percent of the
consumers don't either;
perhaps Bob can answer
these questions. Something is
being swept under the hen
roosts and it does not improve
the farmer's image.
Now if you want some real
"fresh" eggs there's a little
stone house on Hwy 21 near
here whose product does not
raise your blood pressure one
decimal point and lets you go
out in the morning and fully
appreciate this beautiful
countryside.
Thank you
