Popular mail lady retires
Alice Thiel saw many changes in rural delivery
For the first time since
1937, no member of the Thiel
family will be delivering nail
around Zurich. Alice Thiel
drove the RR 2 Zurich run for
the last time on Tuesday,
November 30.
Alice's father-in-law,
George, began delivering
.mail 45 years ago. In 1958
Mrs. Thiel and her husband
Earl took er the RR 2
delivery full time. after help-
ing out many times over the
years. Alice carried on after
her husband died in 1961,
Alice has witnessed many
changes as she has zigged and
zagged over the twisting
30 -mile route. Years ago the
Thiel car was a mobile post
office dispensing stamps,
money orders and big, small
and • medium-sized parcels
ordered COD from Eatons
and Simpsons catalogues. All
this, in 1937, for the• princely
sum of 5625 per annum!
Times have changed.
Eaton mail order is but a
sentimental memory, and its
former competitors conduct
their business from order of-
fices. Money orders and
stamps are usually purchas-
ed at the nearest•post office.
And rural delivery contracts
pay more in a month than
they once paid in a year.
The volume of mail is also •
down. At one time Alice would
sort enougb mail each morn-
ing to fill five or more sturdy
cardboard boxes before star-
ting off.on her daily route.
Now she fills two -and -a -
half. As the postal rates go up.
the number of letters and
Christmas cards goes down.
Alice still has some of the
notes she has received over
the years. One requests
"Alice, blow yount. I have
a parcel". and another pro-
mises, "Mail lady, I will print
my name on the mailbox •as
soon as I can set my hand on
my paintbrushes." The latter
writer, long since dead, never
did find his brushes. Alice
laughingly recalled.
Although many of the
names on the boxes are old,
familiar Zurich -area names,
the increase in absentee
landlords has meant frequent
name changes on others in
front of rented properties.
And even notes addressed to
"Dear Sir".
But Alice Thiel was not
forgotten by the families she
had served so long and
faithfully. A week before she
officially- retired. she was in-

Another highlight of the
evening was Jim Murray's
films of their trip to England

ferent perspective of these
countries from different peo-
ple. Jim's interest in trains
was evident. with pictures of
royal trains. etc.. including
Queen' Victoria's beautiful
coach. Pictures of - his
boyhood home were of special
interest.
A reel taken of 'the model -
railroad setup in. his base-
ment was fascinating. The
locomotives are replicas of
famous trains of Canada. the
U.S.A. 'and Great Britain.
A reel taken at Bayfield
Fair was interesting. too. Jim
claims the Clinton Legion
Pipe Band, which paraded
there, is by far the best he has
heard anywhere. Madeleine
also told us that the Majoret-
tes they saw in Great Britain
just don't compare with what
we see in Canada.
Doris Wilson thanked

expressed their appreciation
for all their mail lady had
done. One recalled the many
snowbanks she had climbed
when boxes had not been
shovelled out after winter

left his box beside his garage

smashed flat by vandals
found his mail in his garage.
• Alice can't understand
what all the fuss was about.
She was just doing her job.
After years of being tied

She will also be able to sleep
