.Feed defensive help
Despite Saturday's upset victory over the defending
Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders, the Toron-
to Maple Leafs need reinforcements, especially on
defence.
While the Leafs have been on an extended losing
streak on the road it has been the phenomenal work of
goalies Mike Palmateer and Bunny Laroque that have
kept the scores aiittle more respectable than they could
have been
T\1/4 .) v... k ago in New York against the Rangers,
Lan),.;.: ,ave up six goals, but, he also stopped 49 other
shots. In a return trip to Madison Square Gardens Sun-
day night. Laroque was again sensational especially in
the first period of a game the Rangers eventually won
6-5.
Former NHL referee Bill Chadwick who does some
commentary for Ranger games said on the air Sunday
night that Laroque plays like a champion in New -York.
In the previous game when he faced 55 shots, the Leaf
goalie was named the third star of the game and receiv-
ed several standing ovations Air his play.
It's probably easy for fans to give an opposing player
a standing cheer when your team is ahead by five goals.
The Leafs were without defenceman Borje Salming
in Sunday's game and Dave Farrish 'was quickly
brought up from the farm team in St. Catharines.
Geographically it's easy for the Leafs to bring up
players from the St. Kitts farm club. They can make
the trip in about an hour. That should be one reason for
current Leafs to give everything they have as they can
be quickly replaced. but. it doesn't seem to help.
Leaf owner Harold Ballard and coach Mike,Nykoluk
have been critical of comments by a number of Toron-
to sportcasters in the last week.
Nykoluk denounced Pat Marsden and Fergy Olver of
CFTO in Toronto calling them "two hypocritical jerks"
for taking shots at the Leafs and refusing to come to
the Gardens to face the music.
Marsden and Olver have been suggesting to their
listeners that .they should boycott Leaf games until
Ballard makes a concerted effort to improve the team
or even sell it: •
The Leaf coach said he feels it's hypocritical to tell
fans to stay away when m the past Marden and Olver
and all members of the media have been allowed into
Maple Leaf Gardens free of charge.
Nykoluk said he doesn't mind criticism fair or other-
wise as long as the reporter or commentator comes
around to see the games and practices and is available
for a reaction.
He went on to say the Leafs are being affected by
adverse publicity, "I .can feel it out in practice. They
are really tight." .
In his response Marden said Nykoluk should concern
himself with making the Leafs respectable, rather than
worrying about the media.
We would think that comments by your boss should
be taken just as seriously as those from the media. After
the recent loss to the New Jersey Devils, Harold Ballard
called his players a bunch of cream puffs and pansies.
In the other incident Wally Crouter and Bill Stephen-
son have been criticized by Ballard and this instance
seems to be justified.
Stephenson recently reported on CFRB Toronto that
the Leafs had picked up Tom McCarthy from the Min-
nesota North Stars. He was apparently going on the in-
formation that McCarthy's name was on the Leafs' list
for a road trip.
It was there alright, but, it was assistant trainer Tom
McCarthy.

Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers. They then move on

Laurier team rolling
The hockey team at Wilfrid Laurier University in
Waterloo is in the midst of a winning streak in the On-
tario university league and an Exeter native Dave
Bogart is a valuable ,member of the defence corps.
The Waterloo based Warn upset Varsity. of Toronto
last week and also recorded wins over McMaster of
Hamilton, Guelph and Queen's
One of the leaders on the Laurier team is their goalie
•Terry Thompson who played with the Kingston Cana-
dians of the Ontario Junior Hockey League when the
Pooley brothers played there.
Bogart and the Pooley's faced each other in a recent
weekend series when Wilfrid Laurier travelled to Col-
umbus. Ohio to meet the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio
State won the first game 6-3 and the second contest end-
ed in a 5-5 draw.

Hawks turn in best efforts of the season with two wins
The Exeter Hawks faced
two cruicial tests over the
weekend and same up with
some of their best hockey of
the season to beat both
Seaforth and Mitchell to
regain sole possession of
fourth place.
Friday night, the Hawks
nipped their namesakes from
Mitchell by a 3-1 count and on
Sunday they thumped
Sea forth 8-1
The two wins give them a
two-point lead over the
Centenaires for the fourth and
final playoff position and they
lead Mitchell by four points.
Both those teams also scored
one win on the weekend to
keep the race close.
Goalie Dave Rook played
superbly in both weekend
games. aided by a stronger'
defensive effort by his mates.
The Hawks have the highest
goals-agaitut record in the
loop and the two goals scored
against them constituted a
significant move in the right
direction.
Another encouraging
aspect of the wins for coach
Bob Rowe was the powerplay
exhibited by the Hawks.
Seven of their nine goals
came with an extra man on
the ice and reversed a pattern
of the season where the
Hawks had failed to take ad-
vantage of powerplay
opportunities.
The locals have two outings
this week, playing in Lucan
against the northern leaders
tonight t Wednesday ► and
hosting <the Mt. Brydges
Bulldogs on Sunday. That will
be fan appreciation night and
admittance price will be cut
in half for that contest.
It's the last time local fans
will see. the Hawks for some
time as they are confronted
with a lengthy road schedule.
They play eight games
away from home before
returning for their next home
game on January 14.
Six powerplay goals
Sunday night, the Hawks
were full value for their
"must win" over Seaforlh as
they scored six times on the
powerplay on their way to'thc
8-1 triumph.
After taking a 2-1 margin at
the end of the first, they pull-
ed away from the Centenaires
with three unanswered goals
in the second and duplicated
that effort in the third.
Rook made 28 stops to get
his second win of the
weekend. •
Tony Underhill and Pete
Tuckey scored two each to
pace the attack with single
goals coming off the sticks of
Scott Brintnell, Jeff Rowe,
Bill Glover and Mike Clark.
Steve Prout and Glover had
two assists eachand singles
