annual U.C.W. Snowflake
Bazaar on Friday evening,
Candle. of
advent lit
The lighting of an Advent
candle opened the worship
service\ at Lucan United
Church Sunday. The Dale
!roats family participated in
this ancient custom as Linda
explained' its meaning and
son Neil ht the candle which
symbolized "Jesus Christ,
God's greatest Gift to the
World." Donna Vanerenthals
prepared the beautiful Advent
wreath which holds the
candles.
Christmas banners and
decorations helped add to the
joyful atmosphere of the
season as did'the Christmas
tree with its Christian sym-
bols, beautifully arranged by
the Bannerman family. Leda
and Sheridan Revington par-
ticipated in the service as
greeters, and the Choir add-
ed to the beauty and meaning
of the. service with their an-
them, "The Lord's my
Shepherd." •
Barb. Bannerman's
children's story 'held the at-
tention of the adults as well as
the. boys and girls as she told
of her early experiences of
cooking spaghetti. A'cooking
tip 'from the Biblesaved the
spaghetti as. she added a
spoonful -of oil to the "troubl-
ed water"! The oil of Jesus'
presence" in our lives •does
something similar for us; for
• not only does it keep us bub •
-
bling steadily,but it prevents
us from "boiling over."
• Mr. Brown spoke about the
meaning of the Advent can-
dle, "Jesus Christ, God's
Greatest Gift to the World."
Although God bleses us with
countless temporal and
spiritual gifts, none of these
. an be compared in value to
the gift of Himself, given in
His Son that first Christmas.
In this way He expressed His
great love for all mankind.
Christ not only came, but
gamelits life for those who
. hated and killed Him. This
gift of Himself is the key to all
other gifts, for He promises,
"If you ask anything in my
. name, I will do it." Mr. Brown
commented, "If 'what i am
asking is consistent with
Christ's nature and for the
good Af,tlle Kingdom. then I
can expect an answer." •
