.Another record near
Wayne Gretzky who set a multitude of records in
the National Hockey League last season is at it again
and should break another mark within the next week
or so.
The super No. 99 of the Edmonton Oilers has scored
at least one point in each of the first 26 games played
so far this season and is nearing Guy LaFleur's mark
of 28.
Gretzky has picked up four points in each of his last
two games and has now reached 63 points in 26 games.
If he keeps up this pace which some of his supporters
thought was slow to start his grand total for the season
could be 200 points.
With the New York Islanders in a bit of a slump,
,two of the original six NHL clubs are beginning to show
they are serious about finishing atop the overall
standings.
The Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens
are off and flying. Both have solid rosters and should
be right in the running when it comes time to pass out
Lord Stanley's battered cup.
The Pooley report
The latest report from Ohio State University in Col-
umbus, Ohio regarding -the hockey Buckeyes and the
Pooley boys in particular is encouraging,
In their most recent weekend doubleheader, the
Buckeyes got a 3-3 tie and a 5-3 win over league leading
Bowling Green, .the second ranked team nationally.
In the tie with Bowling Green, Perry Pooley scored
the tying goal and in the victory it was Paul scoring the
winner early in the third period.
Paul is tied for the team scoring with nine goals and
eight assists for 17 points and the one game winning goal
while Perry is fifth in the standings with seven goals
and one assist for eight points. Each of the twins has
three power play goals and Perry has also scored with
his team shorthanded.
Exciting tourney coming up
Taking a look at the rosters of the 16 teams com-
- peting in this week's Lucan Cup Challenge hockey tour-
nament, it's easy to see area fans will be in for some
exciting action.
The London Quakers who won the grand champion-
ship last year will be back and they will be facing some
excellent competition including Black Creek, the 1980
winners.
President Tom Hardy and his hard working com-
mittee have gone to great lengths to make sure every
team invited is of high calibre.
They checked with every top all star tournament
inOntario to find out which clubs would be able to turn
in the calibre of hockey required to qualify for this
competition.
The team from Mitchell appears to be of a very
strong quality with fellows like Don Vipond, Don Glour,
Charlie Robertson, Tom Miller and Dave Staffen in the
lineup.
The tournament opens at 6 p.m. Friday with the
Lucan all stars taking on Ted Dilts of London. At 7:30
p.m. Hoffey Construction of Windsor meets
Kitchener -Waterloo.
The 9 p.m. Friday contest could be one of the best
of the opening day with Mitchell pitted against Black
Creek.
The defending champion London Quakers headed
by Ed Parkinson play Royal Oak, Michigan at 7 a.m.
Saturday. Merton with former Exeter juniors Barry
Baynham, Bill Fairbairn in the lineup take on Kitchener
Downtown Texaco at 11:30 a.m. Former Lucanite Ed
Harrigan will be in the Kitchener lineup.
The tourney comes to a conclusion Sunday with the
"B" final at 3:30 p.m. and the "A" championship slated
for 5:30 p.m.
The prizes for the winning teams are excellent. The
grand champion team receives $1,000 and each player
will also get a handcrafted diamond ring.
The "B" champs get the village of Lucan trophy
and members of the all star team will receive awards
from Molson's and.theBank of Montreal.
An important part of the tourney is a Saturday night
dance featuring the music of Daybreak. Meals are
available at the arena throughout the three days of the
event.
Exams stop practice
South Huron's senior girls
basketball team has taken a
break from practise, because
of this week's exams.
Hopefully they will still be in
form to play at W.O.S.S.A.
Friday.
Before a new seeding for-
mat was introduced the Ex-
eter squad was scheduled to
meet the strong London con-
ference champs. Catholic
Central. Faults in the former
system prompted the
W.O.S.S.A. conveners to
revise it.
All eight qualifying teams
from each of the four con.
ferences (Huron -Perth, Lon-
don, Lambton and Oxford -
Elgin► will be seeded by the
London Free Press, con-
veners and coaches. Thus in
the quarter -finals the best
team will play the first and so
on.
Exeter coach, Terry
O'Rourke has not heard yet
where his team has been
seeded. Lambton conference
has not determined their
champion.
However O'Rourke believes
South Huron will be ranked
seventh oreighth.If they are
seeded seventh tney will play
the second ranking team this
Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Sarnia
at the Lambton Central High
School. Last ranking will see
them play the best team at 8
p.m. the same night.

Hawks in must win situation in two games this week
The Exeter Hawks lost
their only outing of the week
to Lucan, Friday, while their
nearest rivals grabbed a point
each to tighten up the race for
the fourth and final playoff
position in the northern
division.
Seaforth Centenaires
• • .
scored an unexpected 5-5 tie
with the southern leaders in
Mt. Brydges, Saturday, ,to
move into a tie with the
Hawks with nine points while
Mitchell tied Tavistock to
close to within two points of
the final playoff spot.
Both Exeter and Seaforth
were scheduled to play
Tavistock on the weekend,
but the tilts were cancelled.
Exeter's position is made
more precarious by the fact
ha
boveth Seaforth and Mitchell
games in hand. The
local Hawks have played two
more games than Seaforth
and three more than their
namesakes in Mitchell.
The locals will face what
appear to be "must win"
situations this week when
they play host to both
Seaforth and Mitchell The
latter will be at the rec centre
for a Friday night game and

following Wednesday, the
locals make their first trip to
Lucan for a meeting with the

Browns are nine points ahead

In Friday night's game at

results of shaking the Hawks
into a reversal of the type of
play that has characterized
many of their recent games.
Lucan took advantage of
some sloppy defensive work
to dominate play throughout
the game and the Hawks fail-
ed to play with the en-
thusiasm and hustle required
to stick with the Irish.
The Irish jumped into a 3-0
lead in the first, but the
Hawks came back with a pair
in one of their few displays of
hard work to cut the margin
to a single tally by the end of
the initial stanza.
The visitors scored the on-
ly
two of the second period
and added one more in the
third.
John Medd paced the win-
ning attack with two goals.
Pete Tuckey and Ed Willis
tallied for the Hawks.
Tuckey's goal came on a
breakaway set up by a pass
from defenceman Steve Pro-
ut, while Willis was left alone
in the slot for a perfect pass
from Tony Jones who had out -
hustled a Lucan defender for
a Inose puck in the corner.
