Huron museum
Continued from page 1 A
museum is in limbo, Mr. Scot-
cbmer has his own ideas of.
how he would like to see the
future of the museum unfold.
He notes they closely parallel
the ideas of Neill.
He would like to see the ar-
tifacts and specimens
displayed in a more natural
setting,. much like the many
pioneer villages scattered
across the country but in-
doors. W-o);king artifacts
depicttfr such things as how
wool is dyed and how mats
are made on looms represent
some of the curator's goals.
Such craft projects as can-
dle making, spinning, weav-
ing and sickle and cradle
making hale been done in the
recent past at the museum.
Scotchmer says the crafts are
made where there is space,
often on the floor in the
display areas. Scotchmer
noted a volunteer assists the
museum by conducting craft
classes.
The curator would also like
to see two or three lecture
rooms for the museum. These
room would provide an oppor-
tunity to instruct tour groups.
Proper storage area is also
required. At the current
facility every specimen and
artifact is on display.
Another mark against the
present museum building is
there is no environmental
control. Besides having no
heat in the building during the
colder months thereis no
moisture protection for the
artifacts.
Neill's original collection
has grown and includes such
items at the 1925-26 Essex car
he used to travel across the
country, war memorabilia,
examples of local industry
such as the salt mines and
flour mills; carriages,
agricultural implements, den-
tistry equipment, church ar-
tifacts, clothing, pictures,
animals and many more.
The Huron County Pioneer
Museum is, in fact, Huron
County's past, but what of its
future?

Get home for battered wives
The Huron County Family
Crisis Committee was
granted Goderich council's
blessing to establish a county
home for battered wives in
Goderich despite protests
from a group of neighbouring
residents.
Funded and staffed by the
Mennonite Central Relief
Committee, the home will be
located at 101 West Street and
accommodate a maximum of
three residents at a time. The
Huron County Family Crisis
Committee approached coun-
cil at its November 1 meeting,
seeking permission to locate
the home in town. The matter
was subsequently referred to
and endorsed by the planning
board.
Peter Pocock of 109 West
Street, presented a letter to
council signed by T. Peter
• Gagel; W. Legg, W. R.
Alcock, and Mrs. H. Murphy,
expressing concern that the
home for battered wives'
would result in the devalua-
tion of neighbourhood proper-
ty values.
"We are concerned and
would like to have that fact
noted," he said. "We are
afraid that, in the long term,

it would result in real estate
devaluation. The presence of
such an establishment could
lower values in the im-
mediate area and we would
rather not see it (the home)
there if feasible."
Council unanimously en-
dorsed a motion allowing the
committee to establish the
home for battered wives and
their children after planning
board suggested there is
nothing prohibiting such a use
in the official plan or zoning
bylaw.
Deputy -reeve Bob Allein
said planning board took an
involved look' at the matter
before making a
recommendation.
"There's no reason why
they can't locate there," he
said. "Group homes must be
next door to someone and
there's no reason it shouldn't
be allowed."
Human values must take
priority over property values
councillor Elsa Haydon said
adding that the neighbours
and members of the crisis
committee should meet
amicably to discuss concerns
over the use of the home. She
endorsed the planning board
recommendation. '
Councillor Jim Searls also
endorsed the recommenda-
tion claiming that since oc-
cupation would be limited to
three victims at one time, it
wasn't likel at property
values woulWcline.
"I think it'S a wonderful
idea," he said. "Where do we
put these people."
Spokesman for the Huron
County Crisis Committee, Ir-
vine
Stienman, said the group
was not planning any changes
to the exterior of the ,
residence adding that the!
home would be run as "in-
conspicuously as possible."
The Mennonite Central
Committee, a relief and ser-
vice agency, will supply per-
sonnel and funding for the
home. Stienman said all licen-
cing must be done through the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services.
When the committee first
approached council' for ap-
proval, it indicated that
research supported the need i
for a home for battered wives
and their children.
