Boys basketball season gets underway
As the girls' season is
finishing, boys' basketball has
just started. There was'a tri-
ple header season opener
Wednesday as Strathroy's
midget, junior and senior
teams came to South Huron.
Strathroy won all of three
games.
The senior team has been
practicing once a week since
school started and coach
Terry O'Rourke has had
regular practices for two
weeks. Three of the senior
players attended a basketball
camp over the summer as
well.
The game against
Strathroy was close. South
Huron lost by only two points,
dropping it 45-43. Scoring was
spread out as grade eleven,
Derek Hippern had 10 points
while Kevin Parsons, John
Mol and John McAllister each
added eight.
O'Rourke, looking ahead,
thinks his team should make
the playoffs. "We have more
depth this year and the
players will balance each
other". Last year the senior
team placed sixth in Huron -
Perth, capturing the final
playoff spot.
South Huron's junior team
held their own against
Strathroy but were defeated
50-37. O'Rourke was testing
his new team as he had all
players out and most of the
team scored.
Despite his diminutive ap-
pearance Rob Tait was high
scorer with eight points.
George Pratt and Scott Lovie
moved up from the midget
ranks and scored six points
each. Four points each were
added by Scott Bogart, Tim
Easterbrook and grade nine
Brian Topp.
According to O'Rourke,
who'also coaches the juniors,
his team "will be fairly com-
petitive." He finds they are
fairly young so will need to
gain experience. They arti
also lacking in height so this
may be a building year for the
iuniors.
The midget boys teams,
missing their coach, Mr.
Crawford, were defeated by
Strathroy. Crawford felt his
team "ala not play badly con-
sidering they had only a cou-
ple of hours practice". John
Hamilton scored four points
and was also strong on

defence. Eighteen boys have
tried out, so Crawford will
make cuts later this week.
This past weekend the
senior boys' team travelled to
Owen Sound for the annual
tournament. They lost their
first game to the hosts and
eventual winner, West Hill.
They were down by only four
to end at 45-41. John Mol, the
starting centre scored 12
points against West Hill.
This loss put South Huron in
the consolation round which
they went on to win. Walker-
ton was their next opposition.
Almost every Panther scored
against Walkerton as Exeter
wen 59-41. Kevin Parsons was
hot with 11 points while Steve
Riddell and Derek Hippern
each had nine.
In their final game South
Limon defeated Georgian Bay
Secondary School for their
consolation win. Steve Riddell
and John McAllister each had
thirteen points to make the
win 52-39 for Exeter.
