SENIOR GIRLS TO WOSSA — The South Huron senior girls basketball team lost
to Stratford in the Huron -Perth finals, but, will advance to WOSSA playoffs. Back,

Senior girls- lose, but,
qualify for WOSSA pia
In a very disappointing
game South Huron's senior
girls basketball team,
undefeated in regular season,
gave the Huron -Perth cham-
pionship to Stratford Central.
The best tWo out of three final
went to Stratford in the first
two games. The first game
was close at 44-40 but Strat-
ford ran away in the second
with 67-42.
The final game was played
in Exeter in front of a wild
overflowing audience Thurs-
day. In the .first quarter,
South Huron came out strong,
• looking as if they were going
to revenge their loss on
Tuesday.
All five starters were hot
with Leslie Hunter-Duvar
scoring a quick six points. The
first quarter ended with South
Huron leading 16-6. It looked
very good for our Exeter girls
as their outspoken home
crowd rowdily cheered them
on.
However, Stratford Central
came out in the second
quarter ready to play. With
inspired play they quickly
demolished. South Huron's
lead of the game. A few bad
calls discouraged the South
Huron squad as they were
outscored 21-4 leaving the
half-time score at 27-20 for
Central's Ramblers.
In the second half, South
Huron's shots just wouldn't go
in and was perhaps the worst
playing of the season. This
half was riddled with fouls on
both sides and some very ob-
vious poor calls -by the
referees.
Stratford Central
relentlessly increased their
lead, keeping their starting
line on for the whole game.
South Huron coach . Terry
O'Rourke substituted often.
Cindy Down was noticeably
favouring her foot throughout
the games. Lori Brand has
had knee problems all season
but a fall in Tuesday's game
aggravated the pain. How-
ever the Panthers' second
string played almost as well
as the starters.
Stratford Central truly
outplayed South Huron in this
game. Sue Marsh who carried
the ball for the Ramblers put
in some great outside
shots scoring 22 points while
tall team mate Lori Sippei
was good for a high score of
24. O'Rourke felt his team
was unable to control Strat-
ford's height.
For South Huron's Leslie
Hunter-Duvar had 18 points.
Maja Gans had trouble get-
ting the 12 points that she did.
O'Rourke said the Panthers.
just "didn't execute their
shots." The poor officiating
really got the team down but
O'Rourke believes "the refs
only made six points
difference."
The score was a lot closer in
the first game, 44-40 for Cen-
tral. Again South Huron led,
17-15 at the half, until the third
quarter. Central also had a
cheering section but they
were somewhat tamer than
the crowd on Thursday. Cen-
tral is reputed for starting
slow but once they're Warm-
ed up they are hot.
Maja Gans in her last year
of high school basketball
again scored 12 • lints. Leslie
Hunter-Duivar added 10. Lori
Brand scored seven points
before injuring her knee in the
last minutes of the game.
Faye Gaiser had eight points.
• Second place in Huron -
Perth still qualifies South
Huron for WOSSA play. The
Western Ontario tournament
will be held in Sarnia, at
Lambton Central December 3
and 4. Friday afternoon at
2:00 p.m. South Huron will
meet the winner of the Lon-
don conference. Catholic Cen-
tral will very likely be their
oposition as they have been
very strong this year. In all
probabilities this will be Ex-
eter's final game as C.C.H. is
one of the favoured teams.
After such a successful
season it hurt the team to lose -
the championship to Stratford
.Central. In regular season
play, South Huron had
defeatf'd Stratford by 18
points. It was hoped after
Tuesday's loss that the finals
would be a repeat of last year
when they lost the first game
to Central but came`back to
win the next two exciting
games.
O'Rourke said "this was the
best season ever" in his
basketball. coaching. Their
overall record so far is 27 wins
and 11 losses, an improve-
ment over last year and very
impiessive."
This is the final basketbal
season for three of South
Huron's senior . girls. Maja
Gans, Lori Brand and Cindy
Down are graduating this
year. All three are first
stringers and have played
and developed together since
rade nine.

volleyball
A record forty-two girls
showed up for practice for the
junior girls' volleyball team.
• Coach Mr. Zankowski will
have to try them out in two
separate groups. He hopes to
narrow the team down to
twelve or fifteen girls after
the exams.
This early in the season
Zankowski feels his team
"has potential". There are on-
ly about five returning
players. South Huron hasn't
been known for strong junior
volleyball team but this may
be the year. 7,ankowski hopes
to have a few exhibition'
games before Christmas and
the regular season begins.
The senior girls volleyball
team has not started prac-
tices as the basketball team is
still playing at WOSSA.
Former coach Joe Fulop does
not wish to coach volleyball
this year so the team is in
need of a coach He feels the
team has the potential to be
very. very'good this year. •

of the only third period score
for the Mohawks with Brian
Mercer and Brad Taylor pro-
viding the assists.
Eight goals in the last half
of the game were the big dif-
ference as the Mohawks roll-
ed over the Centralia
Marauders 13-3 Friday.
In the 'first period, Tom
•
Ryan started the Exeter club
off on the right foot with a pair
of goals with Barry Baynham
assisting on both and Dave
Atthill helping on one. Brad
Daters converted a pass from
Rick Lindenfield for the other
early Exeter marker. '

the first 20 minutes of pay was
notched by Dick Lord on a
play started by Doug Regier
and Rick Funston.

Funston and Dick Lord.
Brad Taylor and Tom Ryan
each scored a Mohawk goal in
the closing period to complete
a hat trick performance.
