It's that time of year
It's that time of year - the
time for bazaars. Seldom a
week goes by without at least
one or two bazaars in any
community. One of the dif-
ficult things about bazaars is
deciding which to attend.
Another problem can arise
from trying to make it to two
events in one day.
Some bazaars fill church
auditoriums; others take
place in community recrea-
tion halls. All bazaars have
one thing in common. They
are the culmination of weeks
of . hard dedicated work by
dozens of volunteers doing
their bit for their church
group or service club or com-
munity organization.
Another thing bazaars have
in common is the ability to
lure crowds. Some people at-
tend because they want to
support the organization that
is hosting the bazaar: Some
want to see how others do it
before they host their own
event. Others simply like to
browse around, and if they
find a bargain or something
that pleases their eye, it's a
bonus. And some people just
enjoy the fellowship of the an-
nual bazaar.
For some of us, a difficult
decision confronts us as soon
as we step inside the door.
Where should we go first? The
bake table with its mounds of
homemade muffins, tarts,
bread and rolls, pies and
We can't forget the flea
market - the phenomenon that
has taken bargain hunters by
storm. One person says,
"That's just what I've been
looking for!"
There's sure to be a pile of

See rabies jump
in area counties
Middlesex and Huron coun-
ties could face increased
rabies incidents this year,
Natural Resources- Minister
Alan Pope warned
Wednesday.
The neighboring parts of
Perth,'Lambton, Kent, Elgin
and Oxford counties could be
affected by problems in
Huron and Middlesex, he
added.
Eleven widespread areas of
Ontario may be in line for an
outburst including the
Haldimand-Norfolk Region
and. the Bruce Peninsula.
"These predictions are bas-
ed on wildlife population
trends, on three and four-year
cycles of rabies outbreaks
common to these areas, and
on a review of recent cases
documented by Agriculture
Canada," Pope said.
"There's no reason for
alarm, but residents should
remember there is always a
possibility of increased
rabies. Not all areas will be
affected."
Pope said residents should
have pets vaccinated, Should,
avoid touching dead animals
and should be especially wary
of domestic and wild animals
appearing to be sick, tame, or
unusually friendly.
Between April 1981 and
March 1982, rabies cases in-
creased by 38 per cent in On-
tario to 1,977, he said.
"Foxes and skunks are the
main carriers in Ontario but
the disease can affect
everything from cattle to
woodchucks."
Rabies treatment is now far
less painful, Pope pointed out.
Five dosesvaccine are ad-
ministered in the arm or
shoulder compared to the
series of 14 to 21 needles in the
abdomen used for many
years.
SEALS COMING
Christmas Seals are ex-
pected to be distributed to all
households in Huron and
Perth counties this week, an-
nounced David Wall, Fund
Raising Chairman of the
Huron Perth Lung
Association.
The response to the initial
phase of the campaign, begun
on November 1, has been very
encouraging states Wall. Peo-
ple are becoming aware of the
problems associated with
smoking and the prevalence
of lung diseases. They are
becoming involved with our
fight- against this health
hazard. •
As businesses realize the
major cause of absenteeism
is due to various respiratory
problems, we are seeing an
increasing trend in their will-
ingness to support research
into lung disease.
Wall reports that the Huron
Perth Lung Association has
received approximately one -
'third of the $60,000 goal re-
quired to meet this years
commitments to education,
rehabilitation and research.
He stresses that the final
success of the campaign
depends greatly on the
public's response to. the
Christmas Seal -appeal
presently being conducted.
Please help someone breathe
a little easier by supporting
your local Lung Association
with Christmas Seals.
