Seelster offspring 5.15 mark
A five year-old harness
horse bred and born at
Seelster Farms near Lucan
recorded the first sub two
minute mile in racing in the
Maritittles.
Clipper Seelster purchased
at the yearling sales in Toron-
to by Paul Daeres a St.
John's, New Brunswick con-
tractor raced to victory July
19 at the Fredericton
Raceway.
The record was set at 1.59.3
with veteran eastern pro-
vinces race driver Willard
Carr holding his stop watch
high in the air knowing he had
set a record.
Nova Scotia newspapers
listed Clipper Seelster's
record performance as the
Miracle Mile •
Daeres has purchased a
number of Seelster Yearlings
over the years and is having
exceptional success with at
least one other.
Columbo Seelster, now six
years of age won the Ascot
Pace on June 21 at Sackville
Downs was recent winner at
Presque Isle Raceway in the
state of Maine in only two
fifths of a second over two
minutes.
Seelster Farms operated by
the Van Busse' brothers will
have a full brother to Colum -
bo Seelster at the 1983 yearl-
ing sales.
An Open House was held at

Thompson
test plots
inspected
Last week W.G. Thompson
and Sons invited area
farmers to inspect their
Hyland seed test plots south of
Hensel!. Over 200 interested
people dropped by to see
some of the 300 experimental
varieties of corn; 50 each of
soya and white beans, and 25
each, of wheat, oats and
barley being tested through
the company's breeding
program.
Don Littlejohns, from
Thompson's Blenheim office,
said . three new varieties of
corn and two new soybeans
now on test here will soon be
introduced. Hauser, a new
soft wheat less susceptible to
winter kill, was licenced for
sale to growers as a pro-
prietary of the company. The
Knott brothers near Seaforth
grew Hauser this year, and
harvested 80 bushels to the
acre.
Birka barley is another new
proprietary of W.G. Thomp-
son's which was licenced for
sale in 1982. Trial tests this
year show Birka barley yield-
ed 70 bushels to the acre; the
test weight was 56 pounds per.
bushel.
Doug Mann, branch
manager of Thompson's Hen-
sall branch, emphasized the
long, slow, expensive pro-
cedures involved in develop-
ing new hybrids. As an exam-
ple, he said that of the 25 ex-
perimental barleys grown on
the Hensall test plots this year
or two, or perhaps none at
11, may be chosen for further
esting.
