Good entertainment booked
The variety program to
entertain visitors to Zurich's
annual bean festival is
waiting in the wings, ready to
go. Jay Campbell, TV Lon-
don's weatherman; will MC
the 1982 show, which will run
continuously from 1 p.m. un-
• til about 6 on August 28.
Acts this year will include
the Dicky Dean and Marg
magic show (back by popular
demand with an entirely new
bag of tricks), guitarist and
singer Doug Grant, ventrilo-
quist Earl Litchfield, all from
the London area, the Empire
Stove and Furnace Dixieland
Band from Owen Sound, a
Sarnia dance group and
Zurich's own Mozart's
Melodymakers.
Behind the scenes putting
the program together for the
• past six years has been a
committee of one. Alma
Westlake combines the skills
of entrepreneur, talent scout
and booking agent in one busy
person. (This year she has
been very grateful to have the
-. assistance of husband,
Robert.)
Mrs. Westlake tries to
either see prospective acts'
herself, or send friends whose
judgement she trusts. The one
time she handed over all ar-
rangements to a professional
talent agent, she wished she
hadn't. A comedian whose
material was quite inap-
propriate for a family au-
dience was swiftly and
diplomatically removed from

"The entertainment at the
Bean Festival is for the whole
family", Alma said, "and we
stress this when we are
engaging an act. We want
something that will appeal to
the different ages and various
religious groups in this
community."
Alma is on the lookout for
suitable acts all year long,
always keeping in mind the
limitations of her budget. As
the Festival's only revenue is
obtained from the sale of food
and rental of concessions and
booths (there is no admission
charge), Alma strives for a
happy blend of medium-
priced professional acts and
local talent.
She asked Jay Campbell to
act as MC because he is from
Exeter, and well-known
through his televised weather
forecasts. (Alma has always
received excellent coopera-
tion from area radio and TV
stations, which usually ab-
sorb all costs involved in pro-
viding personnel to take part
in Bean Festival
entertainment.) ,
Besides, a weatherman
should guarantee good
weather for the festivities.
Only once, in 1975, did rain
drive everyone indoors to the
arena.
We have a community

Eagles in finals
The Zurich Eagles opened
their 1982 quarter final series
against the Bayview Blue
•Bombers on August 13 and
closed it August 15. Their
triumphs consisted of 30-6 and
9-5 scores. -
In the 30-6 contest. the
Eagles showed their power
quickly as they scored ten
runs in the first inning. Mike
Overholt led the inning with
two singles as Kevin Geof-
frey, Dave Stark, Dan
Overholt, Barry Overholt, Joe
Overholt, Carl Finkbeiner,
Grant Lee, _ Francis
Denomme and Larry
Denomme all had one hit
apiece. Doug Erb drew a walk
and also scored a run in the
inning.
However the Bombers
came back with three runs in
the second on a walk to Doug
Turkehim, and singles by
John Jeffrey and John Brown.
The Eagles opened the flood
gates again in the second in -
i ning scoring five more times.
They added six in the third,
four in the fourth on a grand
slam home run by Dan
Overholt and five in the fifth
before the game was called
with the Eagles triumphant
30-6.
The second game of the
best of three series saw a
totally different spirited
Bomber squad Lake the field.
The first inning was scoreless
but the Eagles struck twice in
the second inning.
Dan Overholt led off the in-
ning with a single, then Barry
Overholt drifted one out of the
park for a round tripper. The
Eagles threatened some more
in the second on a single by
,Rob Redick and a double by
Dave Stark but failed to score
any more.
The Eagles picked up four
more runs in the fourth on a
triple by Mike Overholt and
singles by Mark Regier,
Barry Overholt, Bob Redick,
Francis Denomihe and Dave
Stark.
The Bombers replied in
their half of the fourth by
scoring five runs. Jim
Wildfong reached base on an
error which was followed by
a single by Joe Kenda. Tim,
Bedour reached base on an
error. Don Oesch then sent a
sacrifice fly to centre field
scoring Wildfong.
Joe Rau singled scoring two
more runs making the score
6-3 Eagles. Fred Ducharme
continued the hitting attack
with a single. Mike Walker
then unleashed a two run dou-
ble making the score 6-5
Eagles. Walker was left
stranded at second as John
Jeffrey and John Brown both
flied out.
The game remained 6-5 un-
til the top of the ninth when
the Eagles came to bat. Joe
Overholt led off by flying out
to left. Mike Overholt and
Mark Regier singled setting
the stage for Dan Overholt's
three run homer to left centre
field capping the game and
the series for the Eagles.
Francis Denomme pitched
both games for the Eagles.
The Eagles will now ad-
vance to the "A" champion-
ship semi-finals in which they
will play the Varna Steamers
who ended up first in the
South Huron slo pitch
standings.

While the variety program
isin progress on the big open
stage in the northeast corner
of the blocked -off street mall,
some people bring chairs and
sit watching - the show all
afternoon. The majority stay
for awhile, then meander on
to visit theconcessions and
booths, or wander over to
observe the frog -jumping
contest.
You can't determine the
returns on entertainment,"
Alma said. "You learn
something every year, see
what people like, and try for
something similar but dif-
ferent the next time."
Mrs. Westlake has obvious-
ly hit on a winging formula.
Each year the Zurich Bean -
Festival draws crowds of
15,000 to 20,000 people. Most of
them catch at least one of the
acts booked by Alma
Westlake for their enjoyment.
