Sunday morning around 9 a.m. they responded to a car fire at practically the same location. The car was a "write off". • Warm clothing to see -Whales World Murray and Alice Hodgson and Murray and Iva Hodgins enjoyed a trip on Via Rail to Riviere-Du Loup, then by bus to Trois Pistoles for ship boar- ding and an unforgettable nine -hour cruise on the mighty St. Lawrence. During the cruise the P.A. system was in use to advise of various sightings of whales, the species, and at which angle, according to the face of a clock, they would be seen, e.g. 12 o'clock, directly in front of the ship, 3 o'clock to the right, 9 to the left, etc. Several species were sighted clearly and many more "blows" were seen at some distance. The Belugas or white whales, put on quite a show and one would think they were trained to swim and arch in unison at times or in rotation. It was all most interesting. Audio-visual presentations were given in French and English and specialists were available to answer ques- tions. There was only one drawback - breakfast on Fri- day morning was at 4 a.m. to be in the hotel lobby for More winners from '82 fair The winners in the "Walk- ing Clown" competition at the recent Lucan Fair were: Helen Barber, Vancouver and Doreen McCracken, Listowel, as Minnie and Mickey Mouse Kathy Johnston and Barb Duncan, Granton, Krista and Joni Duncan, Granton, Vicki McDonald, Lucan and Michael Urbshott and Brett Gatt, Lucan. The decorated bicycle win- ners were Jeffrey Disher, Michael Baghdadi and Den- ton Hackney. In the Lions' Float competi- tion the prizes were won as follows: from farthest away - Emmett Club, Emmett, Michigan; most members in attendance - Ilderton club; best float - Thorndale, for the second year; second place best float - Paris club; third place best float - Mount Brydges club. 4. 3 transfer to Trois Pistoles at 4:45. In my much younger yea I've stayed -up until 3, but never have I had to rise at 3 a.m. The. Auberge de la Pointe is a beautiful hotel, overlooking the St. Lawrence and the cuisine was excellent. We saw 3 Belugas from our window on Saturday morning. For anyone anticipating this Via Rail "Odyssey to the World of Whales" we would advise very warm clothing for the cruise. We had been advised of this by our travel agent, Coralin Knoblauch; formerly of Lucan, but several had not and they were obliged to re- main on the enclosed deck. This did not mean they couldn't see- these fragile giants of the sea, but their view, at times, was blocked by other people. Cubs open new year By Dan Murphy To open the summer with excitement, the Lucan Cubs had a summer camp. This ran from July 23 to 25 at the Parkhill Conservation Area. The camp theme was "jungle" and turned out to be an exuberant and tiring 'ex- perience. We had such games as a hunting safari, soccer, dodgeball etc. A big hit was the safari because of the crafts. The Cubs had to make a jungle suit and weapons. Even though this was fun the main attaction of the camp turned out to be the swimm- ing each day. We also had a terrific "Cubs Own" which is a type of church service. This was provided by Doug Holiday (Mang). The camp wouldn't have been half as fulfilling if it wasn't for the terrific mouth watering food. We would like - to thank the cooks who were Rich Thomas, and Rosanne and Jim Ryan. This turned out to be an ex- citing year for the First Lucan Cub Pack. Visiting soloist_ at Revival Centre Visiting from Rochester, N.Y. daughter of Rev. and Airs. C.J. Williams, Mrs. Faith Prong, sang "Remind Me", Sunday morning. Rev. Williams told the con- gregation'the doctrine of the Holy Spirit brings us into a fuller relationship with God and is responsible for the for- mation of the church through the plan of salvation. Ephe- sians 2:18-21 showsthal noone can come to God unless the Holy Spirit, draws him. The Holy Spirit works on people to purify their lives for the church, Christ's body. Because the Holy Spirit lives in Christians this refining work is never finished on earth. Christians may receive the Holy Spirit to live in them, because Jesus has sent Him. The Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit, and it is the divine guide and leader of the church. Bruce Shaw led singing Sunday evening while can- didates for baptism were get- ting ready. Rev. C.J. Williams, in obedience to . Jesus command, baptized. Isaac and Joline Bartlett, and their mother Mrs. Laurie Anne Bartlett, Robert Kapit- sky, Mrs. Elsie Melanson, Mrs. Andree Kilby, and Elizabeth Smith. Rev. Williams talked about school graduates searching for a place in life being a counterpart to those who become Christians seeking a goal in Christian service. From 1 Corinthians 1:1-3; 14-19; and 22-25 Rev. Williams showed that unless a person is a Christian spiritual things . seem to be foolish. United Church In the absence of Rev. Keith Brown the service Sunday morning at Lucan United Church was taken by Jim Robertson and daughter Janie. Their message was based on Ephesians 2:8, which gives Paul's plan of salvation. Janie asked the questions "Who am I? Why am I here and Where am I going?" She said the "scary" thing about. being a Christian is that she is supposed to have the answers, as God's am- bassador. Jim then pointed out Paul's advice to the peo- ple of Ephesus regarding "salvation through grace". God's love reaches out to remove the stain of sin, mak- ing us new creatures through grace. This is a gift, free, ours to accept, and until we do accept it we are spiritually dead. Janie agreed saying that salvation shows God's kind- ness toward us. His grace in His kindness and the riches of His grace may be ours through faith, and faith only. Thus we will seek to be fill- ed with the Holy Spirit to live a life more pleasing to our Father, living out our iden- tity as sons and daughters of God. Upcoming: Sunday School teachers and officers will hold a planning meeting, Saturday, August 28 from 2 to 5, followed by a barbecue at the home of Bill Davies, where they will be When a person accepts Christ, he has a reason for a spiritual life.
