In the day and age of many
beefs by Canadians, beef of a
more popular nature was the
reason for more than 5,000
persons flocking to Poplar
Hill, Thursday night.
The occasion was the 25 edi-
tion of the Poplar Hill beef
barbecue sponsored by the
Middlesex Beef Producers
and they came from far and
wide.
Master of ceremonies Hugh
Filson estimated the crowd in
excess of 5,000 saying, ''The
food line I worked on served
just over 1,000 people and I
expect the other four forma-
tions did about the same kind
of business.
Five other lines were set up
to provide the visitors with
doughnuts and coffee.
Beef producer president
Les McFarlane said the menu
included two tons of beef, 700
dozen cobs of corn, 34 cases of
beans, 150 loaves of bread and
700 dozen doughnuts.
Kept in reserve, but, not
needed were 400 pounds of

ham. Many of the 5,000 in at-
tendance were repeat visitors
and came equipped with card
tables, lawn chairs and their
own silverware and coffee
mugs ready for an old
fashioned picnic. •
During the more than two
hours of eating time the
crowd was entertained by the
Dermo family band from
Woodstock.
A number of special presen-
tations were made at the
beginning of the official pro-
gram. Honoured were Dun-
can McTaggart, Mary
Tuckey and Leroy Parsons.
McTaggart was the Mid-
dlesex Beef Producers first
president and is responsible
for establishment of the first
beef barbecue in 1958.
Mary Tuckey has been
deeply involved with the
barbecue for the past 23 years
having been responsible for
ordering all of the food during
that time.
The head cook for many
years has been Leroy Par-
sons, a Poplar Hill area
school teacher. Parsons
started up the three barbecue
ovens at midnight Wednesday
and was on the scene most of.
Thursday in order to have ex-
cellent beef ready for the
hungry crowd by 5 p.m.
The guest speaker was
Western Fair Association
president Evan McGugan. He
urged the audience to be
positive and overcome the
many current negative at-
titudes being held by
Canadians.
He continued, "We have
one of the best countries in the
world. Let's finally begin to
believe that. Where else
would you rather live?"
