Willow Wipersets mark -at Greenwood A layoff for almost a month apparently is what Willow Wiper needed to get back in- to his 1982 winning pattern. The four year-old stallion owned by Bob Hamather of Zurich set the track record at Greenwood Raceway in Toronto Saturday night by winning the Canadian Pacing Derby in 1.55.3. The previous Greenwood mark was set July 26 by Cam Fella at 1.56. Saturday's victory for Willow Wiper was his 17th in 23 starts this year and the $67,250 share of the purse sent his season earnings to $297.500. . The Hamather horse won Saturday's mile race with one of his patented come from behind finishes. He was seventh at the head of the long Greenwood stretch when driver Ray McLean pulled him four wide and then came between horses near the finish line to put a nose in front of second place finisher Bret Dodger.„., Hamather and trainer Jim Morrissey of Crediton are undecided about Willow Wiper's next start. It could be in a series in California or the American Pacing Champion- ship at Chicago. Fishing thoughts now to hunting By BW McNutt With the arrival of cooler weather one's thoughts again turn from fishing to hunting. The first thought after that should bp to obtain the proper licences. Those who have been licenced before to hunt ar trap need only to renew their old licences. New hunters and trappers must first pass an examination before gaining these licences. Those wishing to hunt must make appointment to write the exam at either Nutlet (Wingham District) or at Komoka (London District). If the ne* hunter is under 20 they must also complete the MNR hunter training course. This course covers the basic knowledge of firearm and ammunition, their parts and how they work including archery equipment. It also covers proper and safe handl- ing of firearms as well as knowledge of the different types of .Ontario game, their habits and proper equipment required to hunt them. The course will be held in Exeter, August 31 and September 2. Students must attend both sessions. Further information may be gotten ,from the MNR office in Wingham or you may register by phoning me some evening. After completing the course an examination must be writ- ten at either Hullet or REC BALL The great improvement of the Exeter rec fastball league was evident in the weekend tournament as area teams did extremely well. Because of Sunday afternoon rains, the tourney was not completed. The "B" championship final between the Dashwood Hotel Jet Boys and the Seaforth Turf Club will be played tonight, Wednesday at 9 p.m. The "A" semi-final is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the Winchelsea Raiders taking on the Teachers. The winner will play the Good Times Chiefs for the grand championship. In rec league play Monday, Exeter Ford Tractors shaded MacLean's Sports 7-6, the Good Times Chiefs bombed Pfaff Electric 20-6, Hensel' trounced Usborne 20-9, the Derby Dip Shakers downed Gord's and Mount Carmel and Winchelsea were winners by default. Wednesday, the red hot Hensel! Legion dumped Chiselhurst 8-2, Winchelsea and Mount Carmel tied 4-4, the Derby Dip Shakers drop- ped MacLean's 20-5 and the Good Times Chiefs shaded Gord's 6-5. Komoka before a licence is issued. Would-be trappers face the same situation. They must first attend a MNR course held in Clinton. This is an ex- tremely good cow -se and even older trappers would do well to attend it. This course is a 10 week one and covers all fur bearers from their history to habits and how the humainly trap and sell the pelts. Proper equipment and how to catch each species are taught in detail as well as how to handle the fur after it is taken. Humaine trapping is stress- ed to the fullest in this course. After completing the course each student is required to pass a written exam then show their stuff in the field before being issued a licence. Those interested should phone their Ministry of Natural Resources to find out exactly when and where the course will be held. By the way remember that a licence to hunt or trap is not a licence to trespass. 3 DAYS ONLY FRI. SAT. 61 SUN.
