Times-Advocate, 1982-08-25, Page 3The committee asks DId you have a good time at the regent Heritage Days? Dear Editor: Over the past few weeks we have had many inquiries in regards to the outcome of the Exeter Heritage Days weekend. Would like to apologize for the long overdue letter, but due to the holidays Stress causing death of pines Terry Crabe, Pinery Park naturalist, says that the big old red pines kn the area near Grand Bend are dying because they are under stress. The spreading root systems are close to the sur- face of the ground and any .disturbances can cause stress. Even creating a new camp site effects these trees he said. In areas where foundations are built and lawns created, the trees are most drastical- ly affected. Homeowners in the area have wondered if the insects under the bark have caused the trees to die. Accor- ding to Crabe, bugs don't at- tack healthy trees. With a lot of old trees in one area under stress, it's like a flu epidemic among elderly people, he explained. They grow up in a forest and any drastic change in the environ- ment makes them vulnerable. Again this year hi the area, there are red humped oak worms stripping oak trees of their leaves. Weather condi- tions, the cycle of the cater- pillar, so many factors in the area have encouraged the scourge in the past three years. , Crabe says the worms won't kill the trees, that by this time of the year the oak trees have stored the nutrients they need; and that the leaves would be failing soon anyway. In 'the Pinery Provincial Park, nature takes its course and it's all very interesting. For homeowners in the area, tree problems are a trade-off for drastically disturbing the ecology. FUN FOR ALL AT 'The Biggest Lith& Fair in Wade' of many of the committee members, we have been unable to have a meeting to finalize the total results until this past week. As a small committee in charge of a large weekend we feel we hada wonderful, fun filled, profitable and friendly couple of days, but must say if It hadn't been for the cooperation of all the different organizations and some in- dividual people of the town it would not have been such a great success. Most people know that a parade is an expense and not a money making function. You must admit we had an excellent parade. A great "Thank You" to Don Haines who took on a job at the last minute and gave us a 100 per- cent show. This was not an easy job and took many man hours and phone calls to put this all together and still kept within his $1200 budget. Con- gratulations Don. All functions were well at- tended even if the rain did dampen a few like the Rutabaga Olympics and the horseshoes and we were very sorry that the girls ball games got rained out and had to be moved. The craft show was another special event, held by the Kinettes. They had near- ly 60 entries, a good public at- tendance and cleared a profit of near $600•0 The Beef B8Q dinner turn- ed a profit of over $1,500 and on behalf of the BBQ commit- tee - Nancy Hines, Barb Passmore and myself, I'd like to take this opportunity to say a special "Thank You' to the Sorority girls who helped with the preparation and ser- ving, to Dorothy Pfaff and members et Legion Auxiliary for the cooking and preparing of rutabagas and salad, to the Rebekah Lodge, Caven and Bethel Reformed churches for the pies, to the A& El, IGA, Zehrs, Cheese Please, Rutabaga Board, Cooks Mills, Eastern Star and Ausable River Nomads for their ex- cellent cooperation. Also to Russ Tiernan and Jim Darl- ing who gave their time to stand for four hours and carve beef so the rest could enjoy their dinner: Also an extra "Special Thank You" to Len Veri who so freely donated the fresh cauliflower, cabbage and 12 bushel of new potatoes and saved us many a dollar on our first main project. We served over 850 people and hope to do better next year. Would like to know how the people of Exeter felt about the weekend. Did you en'ov yourself. and have a good time? Was there other things you would like to see or do? If so, drop the committee a note, make a phone call, write the paper, but at least give us an idea if it was all worthwhile and if you would' enjoy another weekend next year or if you would enjoy working on a committee. Lois Armstrong Heritage Days Committee P.S. Thanks go to the local' senior citizen who noting she couldn't help with the labor, donated $100 to our fund. .t • GETTING A PLATEFUL - Centralia College principal Doug Jamieson was one of the 5,000 participants at Thursday's annual beef barbecue at Poplar Hill. Above, Jamieson's plate is being filled by Lia Dortmans and Tony Willemse. Conservatives Continued from front page secretary is Doreen Strang, Seaforth. An advisory committee was named and includes, Jim Sills, Charles Corbett, RR 2, Ailsa Craig, Jim Britnell, Goderich, LorneKleinstiver,, Dashwood, Clarence Hardy, Lucan, Elmer Hayter, RR 1, Varna, Glen Webb, RR 2, Dashwood, Merton Culbert, Lucan, Don Shipway, Ailsa Craig, Mary Donnelly, Goderich, Elmer Bell, Ex- eter, and Alf Ross, Seaforth: Dirty dishes Continued from front page the unit. No refund was given. There was also a discussion held regarding a problem en- countered by the Exeter Junior Hawk booster club for their dance held this past Saturday on the ice surface. They had expected to be able to use the tables and chairs from the auditorium, but there was a dance being held there at the same time and the hockey club had to rent chairs and tables elsewhere for their dance. Mickle suggested the facilities committee should establish a policy as to what equipment and facilities peo- ple should expect to get when they rent. There was no decision made on what to do about the rental for the Hawks. Bill Rose suggested they submit a bill outlining the extra costs involved and the board could then give it some deliberation. "Don't infer we'll pick up the whole amount," he cautioned. nlnlinll11111nlllnllililllnlMMnnnnllltlil1MIIIIIIIIIIMIInnnlI111111M111111I11n11111n1111111111111100111 ININIMI1MIMiMMltllnlll SHOE SALE ENDS AUGUST 28 _mitHttlltlttltll insttlto mmtionIItlnuttNtsuitt ltltmusttltlnl hilt. ontim tltltlltmittmosillltllltlltttlmitt111111111 CHILDREN'S SHOES Assorted Styles 1 $4" WON. cos CHILDREN'S SHOES Straps or tie styles $999 HIGH GRADE SHOES - $499 YOUNG MENS STYLES $999 Men's SANITY WORK ROOTS Steel toe & sole $42" E Ea - Sidewalk Specials NI in WOMSN$ Mai ;' 99 1 O% OFF In Stock Luggage and Purses Many Moro Bargains On Display. M1 M,14 Actual Size With Exposure To Approximately 2,480 Area Homes Each Week Almost every advertiser has, at one time \ or another asked us "jokingly" to run their advertisement on our front page. In the post we have not accepted any advertising on our front page, but now a decision'has been made to sell the one col- umn by four inch spot occupied by our mail- ing label. The Times -Advocate is Huron County's largest paid circulation newspaper, with over 6,000 customers each week. Three thousand five hundred and twenty homes take the paper by mail with their name and address going on the top left hand corner of the front page. This leaves two thousand four hundred and eighty exposures for your adver- tising to people who buy the T -A on a regular basis from our network of dealers In the area. For the first time ever this prime advertising space is offered for sole. Imagine the exposure and prestige your business will receive by being the only place to have an advertisement appear on the front page. Because of the large number of advertisers who use our newspaper on a regular basis and the very high demand for this premium advertising spot, there is only one fair way to sell the front page advertising. The Times Advocate invites advertisers to tender on the front page space for a one year period beginning with our issue of September 15. The space will be sold under the following • conditions. • • Copy changes will be made a maximum of once per month • Advertiser agrees to° run for 52 con- secutive issues Written tenders marked Front Page Adver- tising must be received by 10 a.m. September 7, 1982. - • Tenders will be opened at this time and the advertising space will be sold to the highest bidder. Please address all tenders to: Front Page Advertising Contract, c - o Jim Beckett, Advertising Manager. Times -Advocate, P.O.Box 850 Exeter, Ontario. NOM 1S0 • .1.
