Exploring some ads from the '50s
Signs of the times were evi-
dent in ads in 1950 Canadian
Geographical Journals.
"In Every Life... Canadian
Nickel" boasted full-page ads.
"Forty-three years'. of
steel and iron workers and
other men and women mak-
ing supplies for the Nickel
mines, smelters and
refineries."
The ads went on to explain
Odds 'n ends
By Elaine Townshend
research have uncovered
hundreds of uses for Nickel in
the United States and other
countries. Now Nickel exports
being in millions of U.S.
dollars yearly. These dollars
help pay the 14,000 Nickel
employees and also help pay
railwaymen, 'lumbermen,
how nickel was used in the
fishing industry - in the pro-
peller shafts of engines, in
trolling lines, fish hooks and
tackle, and in equipment for
handling and canning fish and
other seafood.
Another ad explained how
nickel steel was useful in drill -
ing equipment necessary in
the oil and gas industry.
Nickel alloys made much of
the oil refinery equipment
and were part of the tankers
at sea and tank cars and
trucks that provided
transportation of oil and gas
to service stations.
Canadian Pacific advertis-
ed 'slumber specials'. "From

economical Tourist Sleepers,
Canadian Pacific offers com-
plete comfort for overnight
travel. Latest addition to

commodation - the

dow... and the cost is no
greater than a single -
occupancy section In a Stan-
dard Sleeper..."
"You arrive Refreshed
when you travel by Canadian
Pacific."
People who preferred to
travel by road took note of
this ad: "Thrilling to Drive...
Without Shifting... The
Distinctive DeSoto."
"Speed a day at the wheel
of the luxurious new DeSoto...
find out for yourself how this
distinctive automobile brims
a new thrill to motoring..."
"DeSoto's famous, time -
tested, `Tip -Toe' shift lets you
drive without shifting. You'll
discover a new world of
motoring pleasure... new
smoothness... new comfort...
outstanding performance..."
"From any angle - style and
performance leader of 1950."
Meanwhile, the "superb
1950 Chrysler" ad claimed:'
"Around the nation's
capital... in important
Waffle's centres, clubs or
resorts... wherever people of
achievement gather, you'll.
meet proud Chrysler
owners... '•
"Whenever you drive a
Chrysler, you will recognize
the approving glances that
are a tribute to your good
taste.",
A two-page spread pro-
claimed: "Dollar for Dollar -
you can't beat a Pontiac... So
Big... So Good... So
Beautiful!" .
"When your choice is one of
the luxurious senior Pontiacs,
you have the opportunity of
possessing the greatest con-
tribution to driving ease in the
history of the motor cat -
famous GM Hydro -Matic

drive that oy tmodes the

by billions of miles of driving
since GM pioneered it more
than 10 years ago. So simple,

along.
