Large crowd sees big models at H.P fly -in
Participants and spectators
battled heat. wind and rain
for the three day model air-
craft meet at Huron Park.
The Experimental and
Mammoth Scale Aircraft of
Canada association held its
annual get together at the
former military air base. this
weekend. The group flies
large size radio -controlled
model aircraft. Marry of the
models are powered by small
chainsaw engines manufac-
tured at Trail Mfg. in Huron
Park.
Flyer Art Lane of London
noted that attendance peaked
Saturday afternoon with an
estimated 500 spectators.
About 40 of the large models
were shown. •
Organizers pointed out the
group. did not have full
clearance to fly their models
Friday afternoon, but high
winds kept most of the air-
craft grounded.
Many participants were
disappointed because of Sun-
day's rain. Flyers from as far
away as Massachusetts arriv-
ed Sunday morning to find the
event cancelled about noon.
Rudy Mayer of Kitchener
said the group's aim was to
promote models with over six
foot wing spans.
Club director Jim Kunckle
agreed. He noted that the
group was formed to organize.
the large scale flyers and pro-
vide self control for this
aspect of radio controlled
flying.
Kunckle said the group was
originally planned for
quarter -scale models i Q -sac
but the EMSAC ( pronounced
as Em -sac) designation pro-
vided more freedom for
larger builders. Both men
agreed that builders of
smaller quarter scale models
would not'be discouraged
Both men also stressed that
the event was not a competi-
tion but simply a fun
get-together.
"I get plenty of hasslesdur-
ing the week," Mayer said. "I
don't need competition."
Mayer however did set an
extra challenge for himself by
actually flying -in his model
from Kitchener.
Mayer's eight -foot model of
a Piper Cub flew the distance
in about two and a half hours.
making only one pit stop at a
private airstrip south of
Stratford.
CROS COUNTRY FLYER - Rudy Moyer of Kitchener displays his eight•foot wing
span Piper Cub model. Moyer flew the aircraft from Kitchener to Huron Park, Fri-
day, to take part in the Experimental and Mammoth Scale Aircraft of Canada meet.
The trophy was presented to Moyer in commemoration of the flight.
Assisted by a ground crew
of five people Mayer flew the
plane from the back of a con-
vertible chase car.
The Crew drove the route
early Friday to check on any
problems. Mayer said the on-
ly difficult portion of the trip
was flying through the built-
up area of Tavistock.
Mayer noted the top speed
of the plane is about 70 miles
per hour but during the
passage he flew at speeds of
about 35 to 40 miles per hour
so he would not out run the
chase vehicle.
The model is powered by a
.9 cubic inch (15 cc) glow
engine which develops about
212 horsepower. Mayer said
he normally flies with about
15 ounces of fuel on board, but
for the trip. the model pilot
was removed to provide
space for two extra fuel tanks.
This extended the aircraft's
fuel capacity to 40 ounces.
which Mayer said was about
five pounds of extra fuel.
Mayer noted the slower fly-
ing speed. much like a car.
cut down on the fuel consump-
tion. allowing longer cross
country flights.
Kunckle said most of the
models are built out of wood
such as bass or spruce. He
noted there was still some
balsa wood. the traditional
material of model airplane
builders. used.
He noted that the only
limitation to the models was
a 53 pound weight limit, need-
ed to qualify for Model
Aeronautics Association of
Canada MAACi insurance.
Kunckle. from Belmont.
runs a company called J-5 In-
dustries which produces kits
for a large scale Stinson and
Bonzo models.
Kunckle is also a director of
a large scale boat group and
his company manufactures
fibre-glas boat hulls as well.
Kuncles models are
powered by the larger chain-
saw motors.
He said that one attraction
of the engine was the savings
in fuel costs. The chainsaw
engines run on an oil and gas
mixture while the glow
engines (similar to a diesel,
run without a spark plug) run
on a more expensive syn-
thetic fuel.
Kunckle agreed that one of
the attractions of the large
airplanes is their realistic fly-
ing characteristics.
Even in Friday's stiff wind,
a Michigan flyer put one of
the large models through an
impressive aerobatics
display. The maneuvers were
smooth and crisp; the
airplane stable and positive in
its controls --both a tribute to
the skill of the pilot and to the
large models themselves.

Frenchschool -req uest
ed
for 55potential students
Hensall area Trustee Ted
Geoffrey asked if there
would be a problem for the
students when they go into
the secondary level. Mrs.
Fletcher, a teacher at a
French school in Woodstock,
said English would still be
taught in the French school.
Board chairman John
O'Leary asked if distances to
the French school would be a
problem. and Fletcher said
most of the students are in
Stratford. He added that
while his family lives in
Stratford, his children attend
an Oxford County French
school.
O'Leary noted the
delegation is hoping for a
school to be started by
September of this year, but
under the Education Act it is
impassible.
"We know what the rules
are and we'll accept the first
of the new yea: ," said
Fletcher.
Under the Education Act
(1980), if there is written
evidence of at least 25
French-speaking pupils
within a jurisdiction, French
classes may be established.
The board may establish a
class on the first day of
January if evidence is
received by September 1,
and if evidence indicates, the
board shall establish a class
beginning the first day of
September of the following
year.
"The board will be
enacting its decision in the
neer future, but not at this
meeting," said O'Leary.
There are as many as 55
potential students for a
french school in Stratford.
A delegation on behalf of
the French population in
Stratford told the Huron -
Perth Separate School Board
at its June 28 meeting they
have accumulated a list of 55
possible students.
Gilbert Fletcher of
Stratford. spokesman for the
group, said of those names
on the list: 85 percent of the
parents are separate school
supporters with either one or
both parents speaking
French.
"We would like to form a
French school to assimilate
and preserve our French
culture," said Fletcher.
"You're not talking of a
separate building?" asked
Stratford Trustee Ron
Marcy.
Fletcher said a classroom
would be adequate for now,
but as the school grew, he
hoped the board would see fit
to provide separate ac-
commodation. TrusteeMarcy
pointed out that because of
the different ages of the
students, there would be
combined classes. Fletcher
said he is aware of that.
The spokesman made it
clear he is not asking for a
French immersion program.
in response to trustees'
questions. he said the list
could be doubled in one
week. Prepared by the Club
de Hirondelle of Stratford.
Fletcher said the surroun-
ding townships are not in-
cluded in the list, because of
the clubs limited resources.
He said the delegation
would be informed of the
board's decision.
