It's all in the .way
you look at figures
An auditor's method of
reporting capital expenses
shows the Exeter PUC in a
deficit position for its 1981
operation.
Manager Hugh Davis told
Monday's June meeting of the
commission that the auditors
report shows a deficit of
$50,982 in the water works
operation.
Davis said the report was
misleading as it showed
surplus funds of about
$182,290, used for capital ex-
penditures at the Springs
pumphouse, as an operating
expense.
He said this would lead the
public to believe the PUC
needed a rate revision as it
operated at a deficit. The
commissions' method of
bookkeeping keeps the capital
expense separate and shows
an operating surplus of
$59,947.
With the method required
by the auditor, Davis said
"you could have money com-
ing out your ears and still
show a deficit."
The manager also noted
that the report showed in-
creased hydro revenue of
$147,107. But he added, power
costs increased by $118,355 in
1981 and only $28,752 was ac-
tually gained.
The hydro department
balance sheet showed a
surplus of $50,005 at the year's
end.
A report from the Elec-
trical Safety Association of
Canada Inc. reported on com-
pensatable accidents in On-
tario utilities.
The charts showed the
PUC's hydro department had
logged 12,712 man-hours in
1981 without a compensatable
accident.
About 3,856 hours were
logged in the water works
IRAQUI MALIBU - Ron Rader of Frayne Chev-Olds shows one of the Iraqui Malibu
cars currently for sale. Though fully equipped with air conditioning and AM/FM
stereo, the cars are being sold at almost half price.
Iraq bound cars returned
creating Iocal bu er Iine-up
Though turned down by the
Iraqui government, a
shipment of 1981 Malibu cars
has attracted the attention of
Ontario buyers.
According to Frayne Chev-
Olds salesman Ron Rader,
the Exeter car dealer
received confirmation from
General Motors that it would
be getting five of the cars.
The confirmation was
received at 5 o'clock on a
Friday evening about four
weeks ago. By 10 a.m. the
following morning, Rader
said the cars had been sold.
Rader noted that an ad-
ditional six orders, with
deposits were accepted in
the next few days. The first
of the cars was delivered last
week.
The cars are part of a
shipment of 12,000 similar
vehicles ordered by Iraq.
Delivery of the cars was
refused and an initial 5,000 of
the vehicles were released to
be sold in Ontario. The
remaining 7,000 vehicles
were also released for
domestic sales, Thursday.
The main selling point
however is price. The cars
sold initially for $6,500.
Rader said that a
similarily equipped 1982
model is priced at over
$12,000.
The cars are identically
equipped four door, six
cylinder models.
All feature air-
conditioning heavy duty
cooling Systems and tinted
glass - intended presumably
for Iraq's desert -like
climate. They are equipped
with bumper guards and rub
strips, body side moulding
and a full size spare tire. The
cars have a three speed
manual transmission, power
brakes and steering.The
Malibus were painted in
seven exterior colors with
three interior colors. They
are being sold on a first come
first serve basis.
Though the Iraqui
government claimed poor
quality when refusing to
accept the cars, their
rejection is not deterring
buyers.
"We've gone over them
all, and they're all decent
cars," Rader said. He said
Three agricrews
ready in Huron
Agricrew has been a big
success with Huron County
Farmers. The program is
designed to provide summer
employment for students
and occasional labour for
full-time and part-time
farmers.
This year there are three
crews based on Huron. Two
crews meet in Clinton, while
the third meets in Blyth.
Foremen for this year's
crews are Susan Nixon,
Wingham; Carol Ritchie,
Waiting game
is continuing
The waiting game con-
tinues this week for
employees of Hughes Colum-
bia Inc.
There's still no word from
anyone involved as to the
disposition of the claims by
the employees of the Huron
Park firm for $431,269.54 for
severance pay, holiday pay
and the salaries owing them
for their final weeks' work.
A member of the grievance
committee established by the
employees of the firm which
went into receivership on
June 8 said there are no new
developments.
MPP Jack Riddell is also
playing the waiting game for
answers to questions he had
posed several Ontario cabinet
members regarding the
employees' plight.
it was indicated that 16
employees are still at work at
the plant finishing boats
under the direction of the
receiver, Bernard Yale of
Yale and Partners Ltd. of
Toronto.
•
Lucknow, and Tim Webster,
Blyth. Each has a crew of
three others, ready and
eager to serve area farmers.
As well, a list of alternates
serve to provide a back-up in
case a crewrnember is sick
and cannot work.
The crews are doing a
variety of chores this
summer, throughout the
county. Their list includes
stone picking, wood piling,
moving chickens., gardening,
and general clean-up.
There has been a very
good response from the
farming community. Crews
have been booked from the
beginning of the program,
June 21 to July 26, although
names are being taken in the
event of cancellations. The
program finishes August 13,
so there is still time to get
those unfinished jobs done.

Recover
stolen car
A car stolen in the Lucan
area was recovered on
Sunday by Exeter OPP.
The vehicle, owned by
Martin Korevaar, RR 1
Lucan, was stolen Saturday
evening and was recovered
in Stephen Township where
it had been driven into a tree.
The vehicle sustained
damage of 82,000.
Early Sunday morning, a
gas barbecue was stolen
from the residence of Doug
Riley, Centralia. it hall not
yet been 'recovered.
the only thing odd about the
vehicles is the black wall
tires and chrome -disc wheel
covers.
The Frayne salesman
noted the cars come with a
full three-year- warranty at
no extra cost.
The first group of cars
received by Ontario dealers
came from the Oshawa GM
plant. The cars had been
returned there to be
equipped with catalytic
converters and other
pollution control gear.
Rader said the next
shipment of the Iraqui
Malibus will be priced at
about 8200 more per car to
cover shipping from Halifax.
Rader was enthusiastic
about the car and the sales.
He noted that of the
remaining 7,000 Malibus to
be sold, Frayne Chev-Olds
may get up to 12 of the cars.
The Exeter dealer is
establishing a list of those
interested in purchasing one
of thelraqui Malibus. Rader'
said the chance of getting a
car was not to be ruled out.
as allotments for the
remaining 7,000 vehicles
have not yet been confirmed.
department also without acci-
dent last year.
Commission member
Bruce Shaw asked why Ex-
eter's statistics showed more
man-hours than utilities of
comparable size.
Davis suggested that other
utiltities give out contracts
much of their work and that
the statistics only show work
done by utility workers.
Others which showed more
hours than Exeter in the past
year may have had major
projects in 1981 Davis said.
In other business:
Davis pointed out the high
costs of parts needed for the
water chlorinating system.
He showed the PUC
members a tiny filter bout
two ipches long by one-half
inch diameter. The item was
priced as over 848 dollars.
Davis was asked if a
similar screen could be made
locally. He said the PUC now
had enough in stock for
several years but added that
he did not think the filter was
a complex item to make up.
The utility will be running
power lines to the ball dia-
mond at the rec centre ground
to be used during a Heritage
Days outdoor show.
Davis suggested the PUC
could do the work at no cost
as a promotion for Heritage
Days. He also suggested the
lines be left up for use at the
fall fair and this would save
costs of the fair.
A letter from the Ontario
Municipal Electric Associa-
tion has suggested rates for
cable TV companies rental of
utility poles.
Exeter currently rents
about 498 poles at an annual
cost of $5.10 per pole.
„ The OMEA letter suggests
a cost of $7.05 per pole.
Davis said many utilities
had been looking for
guidelines for . charges to
cable companies and he said
these may be adopted by the
association.
