Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
Surprises and disappointments are quite
numerous in the two major baseball leagues this
year.
On the minus side of the ledger are at least
five clubs. These would include. the New York
yankees and Minnesota Twins in the American
league and the Houston Astros, Cincinnatti Reds
and Pittsburgh Pirates in the senior circuit.
At the time of writing the Yankees have won
only 32 games and are only saved from the base-
ment in the American league east because the
Toronto Blue Jays have played four more games.
Actually the Jays have won 33 games, one
more than the Yanks but have lost three more and
are one full game behind the New York club.
The worst record in eitherleague is that of the
Minnesota Twins with only 18 victories and 55
defeats.
If the Twins were in the American league
eastern division they would be behind the Toron-
to Blue Jays by exactly 16 games. That makes the
Jays record look a little better. .
In fact, nine of the other 25 teams have won
fewer games than Bobby Cox's club. It is the Jays
best performance to date in their six year ex-
istence and they can be expected to improve some
more before the season is over.
The Jays are still losing a number of close one
run games, but, on the other hand are pulling out
the occasional game in the same manner.
In one game last week, they were trailing 2-0
going into the ninth and came up with three solo
home runs. They eventually won the game 5-3 in
11 innings.
Jim Clancy is the hottest Toronto pitcher at
the moment and last week was named American
league player of the week. Dave Stieb who lost a
heartbreaker to Minnesota Saturday has now pit-
ched eight complete games and he is due to win
more of the close ones.
Add to this, good starting pitching perfor-
mances from Luis Leal, Jim Gott and Gerry Gar-
vin and better relief help from fellows like Joey
McLaughlin and Roy Lee Jackson.
When talking about disappointments, the
Detroit Tigers qualify in a large way. The Tigers
who were ineasterndivision contention up until two
weeks ago have literally fallen apart.
Sparky Anderson's crew has lost 13 of their last
14 games and several in great style. Sunday, they
lost 13-1 to the Baltimore Orioles who are starting
to come to life.
• The Tigers have slipped to six gan}es off the
pace set by the leading Boston Red Sox and down
to fourth place behind Milwaukee and Baltimore.
The Brewers who have one of the most potent
batting lineups have moved to within two games
of Boston and the Baltimore Orioles are three and
a half games behind the front runners.
Sets track record
A three year-old pacer from the Wheeling By
Stables of Grand Bend set a new track record at
the Clinton raceway Sunday afternoon.
Ideal Wilco owned by Doug Courtney's stable
won the fourth division of the Ontario Sire Stakes
in a dazzling trip of one second faster than two
minutes.
The old mark for pacers of a fifth a second
over two minutes was set by Beau Jim driven by
Terry Kerr on July 27, 1980.
Ideal Wilco trained by Jean Poulin and driven
by Norm McKnight Jr. gained over $4,000 from
Sunday's purse in Clinton and now has amassed
1982 earnings of over $22,000. His earnings last
year were $92,527.
His fastest time of the year was a 1.58 trip on
May 29 at Mohawk when he defeated Phil Lobel)
by a nose. In this race Jerry Duford was the
driver.
Winner of the first OSS division at Clinton Sun-
day was Finally Here driven by Bill Wellwood who
nipped Disco Time at the wire by a short nose.
Disco Time is owned by Doug Courtney, Dr. S.
Stewart and R. Boyce.
The third division was won by Prestwick's
Boy driven by Ken Hardy of Lucan after the
favourites Best of Wall and Macs Springfield
broke.
Wilco Time from the Wilson Farms at Gran-
ton won the second division with Dave Wall in the
sulky. Wilco Time just nipped Springwood at the
wire.
Rec ball results
Veteran pitcher Floyd Up -
shall provided the highlight of
the week in the Exeter men's
ret fastball league by recor-
ding 14 strikeouts to lead
Gord's Blue Crew to a 12-1 win
over the previously unbeaten
Good Time Chiefs.
The Usborne Autorunds
started the week off with a 7-7
tie against the Dashwood
Hotel Jet Boys. Gord's
thumped Exeter Ford Trac- •
tors 10-2, Mount Carmel
Bullets downed Hensel] 7-4
and the Chiefs beat
MacLean's.
In later games, Winchelsea
outlasted MacLean's 14-11,
Usborne tied Hensall 5-5, the
Derby Dip Shakers defaulted
to Exeter Ford and the Jet
Boys zapped Mount Carmel
17-2.
Area teams fared well in
the Clinton Tournament that
was completed over the
tl
weekend. The Hensall
Legionaires on the strength of
pitcher Floyd Upshall reach-
ed the "A" finals only to lose
a heartbreaker 1-0 to the
Zurich DJ's.
In the B final, the
Dashwood Hotel Jet Boys
were convincing winners over
the runner up Exeter Ford
Tractors. Rick Skinner not
only gave the Jet Boys ex-
cellent pitching but proved to
be the main source of power,
as he belted out two home
runs in the four game
tourney.
With the season ap-
proaching the midway mark
the league would like to re-
mind Exeter residents that
exciting fastball goes on Mon-
day and Wednesday nights.
Stroll over to the perk and en-
joy a few innings free for the
watching.
