Blyth opens
82 season
The Blyth Slimmer Festival
opens Friday, July 2 with the
first of five plays, Down
North, at 8:30; the Gallery
opening, 7:30; and the
renewal of The Food Spot at
intermission.
Down North is the heart-
warming story o1 an only
child from the city who is sent
to spendthe summer in Cape
Breton on his grandfather's
farm. Suddenly this lonely
self-centred 13 year old
becomes the focus of a huge
family of aunts, uncles and
cousins. He is almost over-
whelmed by the 12 hour days
and his new extended family.
Down North features a
large cast ranging in age
from six to sixty. The involve-
ment of children from the
area and the use of mature,
actors as the elderly relatives
brings reality to the play. A
Blyth native, Tom Bailey, 14,
will play Guy Deveau, 13.
Catherine Battye, 17; Peter
Cook, 14; and Craig Roulston,"
6, will be seen in important
supporting roles. Hugh
Webster, a thirty , year
veteran of television and
theatre, stars as the easy-
going grandfather, Gilles
Deveau.
Janet Amos, the Artistic
Director of Blyth has written
Down North for her theatre.
"I was inspired by the book,
My Grandfather's Cape
Breton but my imagination
went to work and new, dif-
ferent, characters sprung up.
I've incorporated a tale of old
and new love, and some
classic family squabbles so
the play is very different from
the book". Amos states.
Marcel Doucet, an Acadian
fiddler from Chiticamp, Cape
Breton Island where Down
North is set, has composed
and rejuvenated folk tunes he •
will play during ' the
performances.
Quiet in the Land team,
John Ferguson and Kerry
Hackett will design sets and
costumes respectively. Last
year, Ferguson received fur-
ther national acclaim for his
sets for The Visit at Stratford.
Plenty at Toronto Arts Pro-
ductions, as well as for Quiet
in the Land at Blyth.
Down North will run
througout July in repertory'
with Heads You Lose.

I'm tired. Let's go home. I'll

could feel a draft, Jill. The
window's barely open. It's
stuffy in here, and you know,
there's nothing 1 hate more
than a stuffy car."
"Well, leave it open then,
Jack. We're almost at the
theatre, anyway. I hope this
is a good movie. It couldn't be
any worse than the last one,
I suppose".
"I told you we'd be here in
lots of time. We've got our
choice of seats. Where do you
want to sit, Jill?".
"This is too far back. Let's
move up a few rows. No, this
is too close. Let's move back
there."
"If we sit at the aisle, we'll
have people crawling over us
all the time. Move into the
middle. Look at this. My
knees are practically under
my chin. You'd think the
prices they expect us to pay,
the least they could do is give
a guy room to stretch his legs,
I'm gonna get smile popcorn.
You want something?"
"Just a cold drink."
"Excuse me, sir. Excuse
me. I have to get out. (Five
minutes later) "Excuse me.
Excuse me. Coming through.
Oh, sorry lady. Did I spill any
on you? Here's your drink,
Jill.."
"Thank you, dear. The
movie's starting. I can't see.
I wish that man would lean a
little to the right."
( Ninety minutes later) .
"That's it? Is that really it,
Jack? The movie's really
over? I hate a movie that
