Times-Advocate, 1982-06-09, Page 6f Page 6 Times -Advocate, June 9,1982 A shrinking phenomenon Folks, 1 have a problem. Some of you will understand; others may not. It seems my summer clothes shrunk while hanging in the closet and lay- ing in drawers during the winter. I first noticed the phenomenon when I tried on lighweight slacks this spring. They seemed harder to pull on and -felt more snug than 1 recalled them being last year. Oh well, I reasoned, when I wear them for a half hour or so they will stretch into shape. They did not. Now that warm summer weather has arrived; the situation is worse. Shorts and summer tops shrunk even more than the slacks. Since the clothes are not becoming more comfortable to wear and since I cannot af- ford a new summer war- drobe, I have made a drastic decision - diet. My menus consist of black coffee, unsweetened juices and diet soft drinks, lettuce and tomatoes, poached eggs and dry toast, raw fruits and vegetables, lean meat - roasted never fried - and of course, lettuce. It's only been a week, but already. I notice a curious urge to wriggle my nose and hop around. One of the most difficult things to do is watch televi- sion. Do you realize almost every second commercial deals with food? - sweet chocolately crunchy candy bars; tall, cool and creamy sundaes; hot, thick, gooey and scrumptions pizzas; fruit MR. AND MRS. This week there is a church supper, and everyone knows church suppers are famous for homemade pies. I wonder, if I walk borne, could I justify' one tiny piece of pie with a drop of whipped cream? I have not weighed myself 'By Elaine Townshend Nothing can sabotage a weightwatcher faster, unless it's walking past a bakery. I confess I cheated the other day. I was taking part in a workshop, and during the noon luncheon, I ate a scoop of scalloped potatoes. I did not Two baptised at Zion UC The rite of baptism was ad- ministered by Rev. B. If the first weigh-in showed I had lost even a fraction of a pound, I'd be encouraged. But, if nothing had changed or - heaven forbid - if I had gain- ed a fraction, I'd be discouraged enough to fall off the wagon. Anyone, who says losing weight is easy, has either never tried or has a will of iron. I only want to lose ten pounds; I'd settle for five, and I'm betting on two. MR. AND MRS.
