Tea and cookies were served to 20 people. Sunny skies and a cool breeze prevailed Thursday when a bus load of happy friendly seniors from Montrose, Michigan were guests of The Happy Gang at a delicious smorgasbord dinner at noon in the town hall. President Harold Guilfoyle welcomed the guests and presided over the following program, a humorous Kirkton By MRS. HAROLD DAVIS KIRKTON The annual meeting of the Kirkton Women's Institute was held April 22 at Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre with a dessert lunch served before the meeting. President Mrs. Ron Denham opened the meeting with our Institute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. Roll Call was answered by paying fees. Delegates to the District Annual May 11 at Fullerton are Mrs. Clarence Switzer and Mrs. Ruth Shier. It was moved to donate $150.00 to Kirkton fair to be used for Prize Money for 4-11 Homemaking Clubs and our usual Christmas cake entry. It was decided to cater to Usborne Central School Graduation on June 22. The year end reports were given along with the financial statement. Mrs. Ron Denham thanked everyone for their support • Craig seniors host visitors reading by Mrs. Luther Morley, several old familiar songs by John MacDonald assisted by Mrs. Ada McKichan at the piano. Toe - tapping music by Harry Shipley, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Douglas was enjoyed by all. Visitors and home seniors were presented with a Maple Leaf pin from Bob Doyle, chairman of the Optimist Club of East London, representing Canada Week. Our thanks goes to Kay Simpson and daughter who donated a white cake with Maple Leaf flag on it, also a dark cake with Stars and Stripes on it. Music evdning The postponed Palm Sunday music evening • was held on Sunday last in the United Church. Mansion over the hilltop' and 'Mor- ning has broken' were sung by the Senior Sunday school singers. 'Wonderful Saviour,' a musical cantata, was ably presented by the senior choir with part one approach to the cross, part two the crucifiction, and part 3 wonderful saviour. Mrs. M. Wadsworth is organist. Rev. Roberts gave Easter messages between the familiar Easter hymns. A time of fellowship was enjoyed in the Sunday school room.: Our sincere thanks is extend to the senior choir and the senior Sunday school singers, to the organist and choir leader for their time and their talents. WI elect officers during the year and called on Mrs. Gerald Brintnell to conduct the election of of- ficers. The slate of officers was given by Mrs. Wm. Spence on behalf of the nominating committee. Riverview Women's Institute members plan a dessert euchre Tuesday, May 11 at 1 p.m. at the Masonic hall, Main Street. Everyone is welcome. The Activity Centre Committee are planning an auction sale May 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Craigwiel Gar- dens Activity Centre. Donations will be welcomed. Our UCW meeting was held on April 13. Mary Scafe opened the meeting with a reading and prayer. The Lord is My Shepherd was repeated by everyone after which Alice Dickens took up the offering. Mrs. Wm. Sutherland introduced our guest, Gary Coursey, son of Mrs. Joyce Coursey, who gave a very interesting talk on the Mennonite family he had lived with in Manitoba and the family he had lived with in the Philippines. There were also items made by the young children he had taught while there. Amongst other items were boxes, pictures made from bamboo, a beautiful tablecloth and napkins had been made from pineapples, birds made from shells and mugs hand carved from wood. Mrs. Max MacGregor read a suitable poem in memory of Mrs. Bessie Amos. The minutes were read and approved as well as treasurer's report was given. Thank you cards had been received from Ida Bice, Vesta Effer, Weldwood Gi11,1 Violet Allison and The Craven and Harmer family. Upcoming events are Brinsley UCW May 5 at 8 p.m.; Carlisle Gernamuim Tea May 26 at 7 p.m., $1.50 a person, April 28 is Regional at Parkhill with Ailsa Craig UCW to assist with the of- fering. Our church an- niversary is May 30 when lunch will be served after. Special flowers are to be put in' the church. Alma College is August 22-25. Our next meeting is our 20th UCW anniversary. • GUESS BY SMELL AND TASTE - Ruth Mercer offers Jon Moore a cracker to see if the blindfolded boy can iden- tify it by smell and taste. This was one of the games played at the Sunshine Kids nursery school. Stage open house The Sunshine Kids nursery school is holding an Open House each day this week at its location at the Exeter United Church. Sunshine Kids Incorporated Nursery School is a parent operated centre for pre-school children from two and a half to five years of age. Parents are involved in the school by providing snacks and assisting teacher Mrs. Ruth Mercer and assistant Mrs. Audrey Mellick. While at school children en- joy games, songs, crafts as well as obedience, manners and co-operation. Regular field trips to such points as the police station, fire hall, hospital, dentist and area farms are made possible with parental involvement. Sunshine Kids has spruced up the equipment with paint, new carpets and toys to add to the vibrant life at school. Parents enjoy the smiles on the faces of the children as they talk about their ex- periences at school. The weather is getting a little more pleasant. Have a great week - Tony Tiger. The child of the week this week was Terri Maurer. She brought a monkey, a grey bunny and some skating badges. She also brought a photo album and some rib- bons she has won. - Wendy Boogemans. The grade eight graduation project of selling magazine subscriptions ended April 15. The results areas follows: 90 subscriptions sold and a com- mission of one-third gives us $349.50. The most popular magazine was "Chatelaine" with 21 orders and the second most popular magazine was "Reader's Digest" with 10 orders. The grade eights would like to thank everyone who contributed to this- pro- ject. - Leanne Stewart, Lori Vincent. You have noticed that there have been student teachers interviewed in our article for the last few weeks. I decided to interview Mrs. Furtney because she has a very impor- tant job in our school, the library. She teaches library skills which is the proper use of the library and she shows students how , to appreciate books. She helps the students select books either for research or for enjoyment. She has preschoolers for an hour every other week. She teaches them about different From Stephen Central School authors. She also has library assistants who help her sort and put away books. She's very interesting person. - Roger Ward.
