WIN TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS - The South Huron District High School gymnastics team hos won the Huron -
Perth and WOSSA championships. Back, left, Lisa Rundle, Jacqueline Hyde, Darlene McBride, Mortah Osman,
Carlo Solomon, Jackie Cottrell, Susan McClure, Jody Hay and coach Carey Eddy. Front, Starr Jesney, Catherine
Patterson Sue Boyle, Leigh Barnard, Gail Willard, Susan Birmingham, Daryl Webber and Sandra McCurdy.
In gymnastics
511 team wins two titles.
Five months ago, South
Huron gymnastics coach,
Carey Eddy, revealed her
hopes that this year's team
could improve on last year's
third place finish and a fifth
placing at the 1t.:0 WOSSA
championships by winning
the overall title. Saturday at
St. Thomas Parkside, her
dreams were realized as
South Huron, led by
Catherine Patterson's win in
the senior B division,
amassed 189.83 points to St.
Thomas Central Elgin's
159.73 score defending
champion Oakridge's 113.40.
"It was my objective at the
beginning of the season but
when it (winning the title)
finally happens, you're
totally unprepared," said
Eddy. As convenor of
WOSSA this year she was
responsible for the ad-
ministration end of the meet
as well as trying to coach her
team. After a hectic day,
Eddy had difficulty con-
taining her emotions for the
remainder of the awards
presentation when she
learned of her team's vic-
tory.
Patterson, a WOSSA and
OFSAA champion last year
put herself under excessive
pressure, according to Eddy,
but still managed to take the
senior B title with 31.57
points, including first place
finishes on the beam, uneven
bars and floor exercise, "She
hada very bad day when one
considers what she's capable
of," remarked Eddy,
Monday. Patterson, in one of
her more mistakes fell from
the beam during com-
petition, Saturday. Her score
of 8.10 on the uneven bars
was well below the 9.00 she
registered at the Huron -
Perth meet, last Friday.
Eddy feels that Patterson
has endured the pressure
and will be in top form for
the OFSAA championships
April 30 - May 1 in Lindsay.
Starr Jesney rebounded
from a disappointing
showing at Huron -Perth to
earn 29.45 points, just two
less than her teammate
Patterson and third place in
the senior division. Jesney
was second on the uneven
bars with 7.8 mark and third
on beam with a score of 6.9.
Helped by other seniors
Sandra McCurdy and Carla
Solomon, South Huron
captured the senior division
title.
Jacqui Hyde had a sur-
prising 7.8 mark in elite B
vault to qualify along with
Patterson for OFSAA action.
Hyde teamed with South
Huron's Sarah McClure to
capture the elite B division
title. with 44.40 points. Hyde
also had second and third
placings on the beam and
uneven bars and placed
third.
Leigh Barnard scored 7.85
and placed third in the junior
floor exercise to lead South
Huron to a similar third
team placing. Barnard was
seventh on the uneven bars
with a 7.00 mark directly
behind teammate Susan
Birmingham who scored 7.1.
Birmingham was also fourth
on the beam with a mark of
7.73. -
A 7.25 score by Gail
Willard on uneven bars and a
7.13 mark by Susan McClure
on the beam were enough to
give them fourth and fifth
places in their respective
events. Jackie Cottrell was
sixth in the floor exercise
with a 7.45 score. The in-
termediate team from South

Huron was also third with
28.56 points.
The team raised over 8300
from a demonstration they
performed for school
students, Thursday. Eddy
hopes that with student
council assistance, a new
balance beam can be pur-
chased to replace the one
that was vandalized last
year.
