EMHA start move to divest from' junior Hawks
Members of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association
gave approval to taking
steps to divest their in-
volvement in the Exeter
Junior "D" Hawks at their
,annual meeting, Wednesday.
This past season, the
Hawks were operated by a
booster club after some
initial financing by the
EMHA, and the plan is to
continue that method of
operation until' the newly
formed Exeter and Area
Junior Hockey Association
would assume total control
and operate with its own
organization and con-
stitution outside the
jurisdiction of the EMHA.
Discussions between the
EMHA executive, booster
club members and local
lawyer Randy Evans have
been carried out in recent
weeks and will continue until
a formal agreement has
been reached.
The original motion on the
floor before the 48 people in
attendance was that the
executive of the EMHA
would approve the time and
conditions of divesting their
interest in the Hawks, but an
amendment was approved
that any such agreement
would have to be approved at
a general meeting before
ratification.
It is anticipated the new
group would take over for
the operation of the junior
team for the 1983-84 season.
In recent years. the
operation of the Hawks has
been hotly debated at EMHA
annual meetings, par-
ticularly when the team
finished the season in the
red.
EMHA _president Bob
Whiteford said there were
people in the community
interested in taking over the
Hawks and said it was
probably for the betterment
of hockey.
He said the new group
would haveits own con-
' stitution, there would be a
settlement for the team's
equipment, the two groups
would coordinate fund-
raising efforts to avoid
conflicts, player develop-
ment fees would go to. the
EMHA except where players
had played with the Hawks
and then the Junior Assoc.
would receive 15 percent,
and releases for minor
players to the team would be
on the basis of OMHA and
OHA regulations.
. Those in attendance ex-
pressed concerns over the
proposed split, but there was
no opposition other than to
have the agreement
presented to a general
meeting before ratification.
Gabby Mol, representing
the boaster club, said the
Hawks enjoyed a successful
season and attendance was
up. The booster club ended
the year with a balance of
8873, having started with a
balance of just over $1,500 in
the start-up fund provided by
the EMHA through receipts
from the Good Brothers
dance which had been
primarily organized by the
Hawks.
Whiteford, who was
returned as president, said
the EMHA also had a suc-
cessful year. He outlined
highlites including the fact
most coaches had completed
their level 1 programs, new
lockers had been built to get
better control • for team
equipment, the noviceand

nainent had been successful
from all standpoints.
Bill Batten gave a synopsis
of the survey sheets which
had been returned. from
Parents at the end of the
season in which they were
asked to comment on various
aspects.
It was indicatedthat most
parents were happy with the
peat season for all-star and
houseleague programs and
there were several plaudits
given td the executive and
those involved.
Several of the survey
sheets indicated a need to

Sportsman show visitors
disappointed by dIsp lays
By Bill McNutt
Disappointment has been
running athong thousands of
people who attend the Sport-
sman Show in Toronto.
Hunters have seen more and
more displays unrelated to
their sport show up and less of
the ones they want.
The London Sportsmen
show seems to be doomed for
the person interested in hun-
ting and fishing. It has been
three years since anything
has been there for the hunter
and this year the fishermen
'were nearly left out.
I spoke to Ken Allen of
Ken's Live Bait in London
who in 1981. had one of the
largest displays at the London
show. He told me "I wasn't
there this year and I'll not
'likely even go back'. He was
obviously disappointed.
"There were only four
fishing displays there (in
1981) and 'all the people who
visited u5 expressed their
disappointment. On one side
of us they had someone sell-
ing dress shoes and the other
side selling trinkets, earrings
and junk."
This was basically the same
story I got when I spoke to
several London and area hun-
ting and fishing merchants.
Hockey grads
to‘ get awards
The Exeter Minor Hockey
Association will honor
graduates who move to
Junior "B" and "A" teams
in the future and the first two
recipients of the plaques
were honored at the annual
meeting, Wednesday.
The two were Dave Shaw
of the Kitchener Rangers of
the OHA Major "A" loop and
Tom Coates of the Strathroy
Junior ..5,! team. Both
played witCp:, Stratford last
season after helping Exeter
win an OMHA midget title
the previous year.
Two of their former -EMHA
coaches, Jack Fuller and
-Jack Underwood made the
presentation. '
"These two never gave us
a minute's trouble," Fuller
commented and added that
both played to 100 percent of
their ability at all times and
displayed the dedication and
desire to advance in hockey.
Looking up at the two
lanky players, Underwood
quipped: "I remember when
we had to help lift these guys
over the boards."

Unknown bunch
"We really are an
unknown quantity,"
remarked coach Pat Rowe
about her junior badminton
team as they prepare for the
Huron -Perth tournament,
Tuesday, in Wingham.
ROwe, who as of Monday,
had not finalized her roster
feels the team has improved
markedly since the begin-
ning of the season and
despite a lack of experience
should fare well at the
conference championships.
Scott Bogart, a first year
player, has demonstrated
exceptional talent according
to Rowe.
