Tells critics "get off your butt and on ice"

Hawks coach resigns after five and a half years
Ron Bogart, coach of the
Exeter Hawks for the past
five and a half seasons,
resigned his position in an
emotional address at the
team's annual banquet,
Saturday, in which he took
some verbal pokes at some
of his detractors.
He was particularly
critical of team manager
Fred Mommersteeg, whom
he said had stabbed him in
the back a number of times,
but noted that Mommersteeg
was not the only one.
The SHDHS teacher said
this past season had been
particularly frustrating and
said meetings had been held
to get rid of him. "I was too
stubborn to quit," he said in
reference to the fact the
movement did not succeed
and he completed the season.
He said everyone criticizes
the coach when the team
loses, but said fans in the
stands and those who sit in
the press box should get off
their butt and out on the ice
and see how they would do
running the team.
"Some support you when
you need it, while others let
you sink on your own" he
commented, saying his
coaching career had resulted
in some frustrating moments
and some that were very
satisfying.
Noting there appeared to
be a great wealth of coaching
talent in the stands and the
press box, Bogart said the
players should look forward
to next year.
He criticized Mom-
mersteeg for not showing up
in the Exeter dressing room
after the team lost to Mit-
chell in this year's final
playoff game, saying the
manager was celebrating
with the Mitchell team.
Bogart reviewed his five
and a half years as coach,
noting he was appointed as
"interim coach" in
December of 1976 when the
incumbent was dismissed by
the Exeter Minoir Hockey
Association for missing
practices and low team
morale.
Bogart was president of
the EMHA at the time and
under his direction, the team
went on to win the OHA title
by ousting Stayner in four
straight.
The following year, they
lost in the deciding game of
the best -of -seven final to
Lakefield and in 1978-79 they
were ousted by St. George in
the OHA semi-final,
The next three seasons
they were eliminated by
Mitchell in the first round of
playoffs. In 299 games,
Bogart's teams recorded 174
wins, 109 lasses and 16 ties.
They won three league
championships and he also
coached two northern teams
to victory in the annual all-
star game.
"I must have done
something right as an in-
terim coach," he said in his
farewell, Saturday. During
his tenure, he also initiated
the Hawks tournament.
He said his role also in-
cluded printing the program
inserts, flushing the toilets,
cleaning the dressing room
and the tough task of team
discipline.
Over the years, he missed
only four games and three
practices and said he had
dedicated himself to the job
often at the expense of
family life and having the
opportunity of watching his
two sons play hockey.
The veteran coach, who
also coached minor teams
before moving to the Hawks,
said his personal cost this
year with the team ' would
probably amount to $550 to
$600.
"I always placed the
Hawks first, whether we
were winning or losing," he
said, adding that he hoped
communication between
team management would
improve.
Speaking to this year's
team members, he said he
was sorry he couldn't
motivate them to do better
than they had when they
were eliminated by Mitchell
after finishing second in the
league schedule.
In concluding, Bogart said
he was not ending his
association with the team on
a sour note. "I will continue
to support you," he said,
adding that he was resigning

being injured in a game.
The situation surrounding
Bogart's resignation will
probably be discussed at the
annual meeting of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association on
Wednesday, April 14.
This year, the operation of
the Hawks was turned over
to a booster club, and that
arrangement will also
probably be reviewed at the
annual meeting.
