Each week the lbcal hockey season becomes closer
and closer to coming to a conclusion.
Closest to home the enthusiastic rivalry between the
Zurich Buckeyes and Hensall Sherwoods is at a fever
pitch.
The defending champion Buckeyes are leading the
final series three games to two. They could wrap up the
championship with a win in the sixth game in Hensall
Thursday night, but, don't wager too much green stuff
on it.
The Sherwoods have a habit of bouncing back and
have done just that in both games they have won so far
in this final series.
The Hensall arena should be packE 1 to capacity
Thursday night and if a seventh game goes in Zurich
Sunday afternoon our only advice is get there early.
Sixth game in Lucan, Thursday,
Irish lead Starner in 011* Junior
Two straight victories have
put the Lucan Irish in the lead
in their Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" semi-
finals with the Stayner
Siskins.
After losing 7-2 on home ice
Thursday night, the Irish
came roaring back to get two
wins on Stayner ice. They won
5-4 Saturday night to even the
best -of -seven series at two
games apiece and won a 9-6
shootout'Monday night to take
a one game advantage.
The sixth game of the series
is scheduled for the Lucan
arena tomorrow night, Thurs-
day at 8:15 p.m. If a fifth con-
test is necessary it goes Satur-
day night in Stayner.
The first period in Mon-
day's fifth game produced 10
goals with the Irish moving
out in front 6-0.
The Irish counted the first
two goals of the game in the
early minutes of the opening
period and from then on it
was see -saw back and forth.
Doug Latta started the
Lucan scoring on a three-way
effort with Jeff Shipley and
Steve Glenn and Glenn follow-
ed with a successful shot on a
play set up by Geoff Edwards.
Keith Hartwick fired the
third Lucan marker with Paul
Wraith and Jamie Shipley
assts . Next it was Kevin
finishing off a three-
way combination with Steve
Glenn and Geoff Edwards.
Later in the first period Al
Craig hit the Stayner net with
The only other team with championship hopes still Lu
alive is thecan Irish junior "D" club and they also
have the capacity to bounce back.
To show they have championship potential the Iris
after being defeated quite soundly in Lucan Thursday
night bounced back and won in Stayner's own rink
Saturday night.
The sixth game will be played tomorrow night
Thursday in Lucan and if a seventh game is necessary
it goes in Stayner Saturday night.
The winner of the Lucan-Stayner series meets
Langton for the all -Ontario championship. Langton
disposed of the Belmont Bombers in four straight in the
other semi-final. The Bombers were defending champs.
Our best wishes go out to manager Bob Taylor,
coach Dave Revington and'all the Irish in their quest
for the provincial trophy.
The Lucan bantams who appeared well on their
way to the OMHA finals were sidetracked quickly by
Wainfleet. The Lucan youngsters won the first two
games over Wainfleet, but, then ran into a few injury
problems and dropped the next three to end their season
a little quicker than they hoped.
Congratulations to coach Ken Freeman and
manager Reg Crawford and the boys for a great season.
Other seasons end, too
It's not only the amateur teams that are finding
their seasons cut short. Five teams in the NHL will hang
up their skates after this coming weekend.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are among the casualties
and it has to be one of the most disastrous in Leafs
history.
Although they were already out of playoff conten-
tion, the' Leafs did it up in real style over the weekend.
They lost two games. That shouldn't be great news.
But, the shocking. part of it is that both losses came at
the hands of Detroit Red Wings who were able to break
out of a 14 game losing streak by beating the Toronto
club.
It must be the Toronto atmosphere that holds the
team down. A quick look at the records of former Leafs
reveals that at least 18 are in the playoffs and doing well
with other clubs.
The star of ex -Leafs appears to be Blaine Stoughton
who has 50 goals with the lowly Hartford Whalers. Dar-
ryl Sittler scored two goals and one assist in a
Philadelphia Flyer uniform over the weekend and ap-
pears to be fitting into his new role quite nicely.
Wilf Paiement and Laurie Boschman have fitted in-
to their recent new roles at Quebec City and Edmon-
ton, respectively very well.
This NHL season has produced one big surprise and
one dissapointment, of course in addition to Toronto.,
It's not difficult to guess that the Winnipeg Jets
were the big surprise. With coach Tom Watt at the helm,
the Jets rose to second place in the Norris division and
about ninth spot in the overall standings.
When the NHL season started last fall, the odds on
the Winnipeg Jets winning the Stanley Cup were listed
at 250 to one by the oddsmakers. They are now listed
at 12 to one.
On the other side of the coin, the Los Angeles Kings
were among the favorites in October at four to one.
Now, if you wish to place a dollar or two on the Kings
to win it all, you can get odds of 50 to one.
Currently the oddsmakers show the Islanders,
Canadiens, Oilers, Bruins and Sabres in that order as
the best choices to win this year's Stanley Cup.
Baseball nearing
Spring training does not a season make, but, the- f
Toronto Blue Jays appear to be headed for the best year
they have yet to enjoy in the American baseball league. f
Under new manager Bobby Cox who is an ex-
perienced big league manager the Jays have won 13 and 1
lost eight on their exhibition schedule to date.
The Jays open the season in Detroit against the
Tigers on April 6 and will be at CNE Stadium in Toron-
to for their home opener on Friday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m.
with the Milwaukee Brewers supplying the opposition.
