Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
The hockey season locally is quickly slipping away
with only a few teams left in contention.
The South Huron hockey league has run down to the
final round with the defending champion Zurich
Buckeyes taking on the Hensall Sherwoods. This is the
renewal of an old rivalry which should provide an ex-
cellent brand of hockey.
After losing their first three games, the Exeter
Mohawks put up a real battle with two wins over Hen-
sall before bowing 10-9 in the sixth game. The Mohawks
led 7-6 at one point in the second period.
In Junior "D" ranks, the Lucan Irish polished off the
Mitchell Hawks in four straight games in the northern
division final and now are set for Ontario Hockey.
Their next opposition comes from Stayner. The first
game goes in Lucan Friday night at 8:15 with the se-
cond back in Stayner Monday night. The Lucan ban-
tams have also reached the semi-final plateau in OMHA
playoffs and meet Wainfleet in the next round. This is
basically the same club which won the OMHA pee wee
title two years ago.
The first game will be played in Wainfleet Friday
night with the second in Lucan, Sunday.
The Exeter midgets are battling right down to the
wire in their second round of OMHA playoffs.
The best -of -five series against Ohsweken has turned
into a sudden death game as each team has won both
games on their home ice.
The locals won the toss of the coin and the fifth game
is set for tonight, Wednesday at the South Huron Rec
Centre at 8:30 p.m. Should provide lots of excitement.
Carnivals, Sunday
Deciding game here tonight
Midgets all even in OM1IA playoff
The Exeter midgets will be
hoping that the pattern
established in their best -of -
five OMHA quarter -finals
with Six Nations will con-
tinue when they take to the
ice at the rec centre tonight
(Wednesday) for the
deciding game.
Each team has won two
games on home ice to
deadlock the set and the
locals will be trying to
capitalize on that home ice
advantage to move into the
semi-final series.
Friday night, the Exeter
crew withstood an inept first
period through the heroics of
netminder Peter Dearing
and went on to post a 4-2 win,
while back in Ohsweken on
Sunday they failed to wrap
up the series when the home
team posted a 5-3 margin.
This is our last chance to mention the two figure
skating clubs in the area that are staging their annual
carnivals, Sunday afternoon.
The Zurich -Grand Bend figure skating club holds
their carnival at the Zurich arena with Lynn
Nightingale as the featured skater along with an ap-
pearance of the Exeter skating club's precision team.
At the Lucan arena, all members of that village's.
figure skating club will be presenting their skills on ice.
Skaters on Television
The Ilderton precision skating team will be featured
on Bill Brady's Performance program on CFPL televi-
sion on Sunday March 28 at 5 p.m.
Included on the roster of the Ilderton team are four
skaters from the Exeter club. They include Susan
Tiernan, Kelly Livingstone, Janet Pfaff and Heather
Prout.
The Ilderton team won the gold medal at a competi-
tion in Mitchell Saturday and a bronze at the Western
Ontario sectional championships in Port Stanley in
February.
Should Be An Improvement
The showing by Team Canada in this April's world
hockey championships should be improved somewhat
over a year ago mainly because a larger number of
players will be available.
The world's tourney to be held in Helsinki and Tam -
pare, Finland is, being held one week later than in 1981
and thus eight teams should be eliminated in the first
round of NHL playoffs allowing a few players to sup-
plement those already chosen from the five that do not
make the playoffs.
The fifth games of the eight semi-final series in the
Jour divisions if necessary will be played on April 13.
That's 20 hours before all teams in the tournament must
post their final rosters.
Any teams eliminated in three or four games would
give Team Canada officials a little more time to get ex-
tra players.
The general manager of this year's
' Team Canada is former Washington Capitals general
manager Max McNab.
McNab says he is enthusiastic about putting together
a good team. He added, "The overall style in the NHL
has swung towards the European style in skating and
puck control and I think all our players are more
familiar with what they will be facing in Finland.
Anything can happen in a short playoff series so it's
quite possible a super star or two could be put on the
NHL sidelines after the first round and eligible to head
overseas.
A week earlier the teams
had traded a pair of three -
goal victories and in the four
games, each squad has
netted 16 goals.
Sunday's loss in Ohsweken
has been protested by the
Exeter club, based on the
fact that Pete Hill, who
Friday night picked up a
spearing penalty which calls
for a match penalty and
suspension, was in the lineup
for the fourth game.
The protest will only have
a bearing on the series if
Exeter loses the fifth game
tonight.
Dearing hot
Goaltender Pete Dearing,
who has been most in-
strumental in the team's
playoff showing to date, was
at his best for Friday's
contest in Exeter and turned
aside a barrage of shots by
the visitors who carried play
throughout the first half of
the game.
Six Nations hit the
scoresheet early in the first,
but Dearing held them at bay
for the rest of the period and
Eric Tadgell evened the
count in the first minute of
the second when he took a
pass from Chris VanGerwen
and broke into the clear and
tucked .tbe puck into the
corner.
The visitors regained their
one -goal margin at the 4:46
mark and again Exeter
came back to knot the count
when VanGerwen scored on
a power play at the 8:20
mark with Tadgell and Greg
Hern drawing the assist.
Exeter scored the eventual
winner with just one second
left in the middle period
when Scott Brintnell shoved
the puck across the line on
another power play with
Exeter enjoying a two-man
advantage. Mike Tiedeman
and Steve laatten picked up
the assists on that one.
Exeter couldn't capitalize
while still enjoying a two-
man advantage to start the
third period, but Tadgell
scored his second of the
game just before the three
minute mark when he took a
pass from Dave Hayter and
blasted a low drive into the
corner from the top of the
face-off Circle.
The locals ran into penalty
trouble shortly after and had
two men in the box, but the
defenders and Dearing held
the Six Nations crew at bay
and then started to forecheck
more diligently to preserve
the victory.
Come out flat
Despite having the chance
to wrap up the series in
Ohsweken, Sunday, the
Exeter crew came out flat
and the home crew carried
the play throughout the
contest, with Dearing again
being the main reason for the
score being close.
Six Nations stored after
three minutes of play on a
power play, but Scott
Brintnell got that one back
near the end of the stanza
while his team was a man
short. He picked up a puck in
the corner of the Ohsweken
zone and his shot across in
front was deflected into the

Former Irish Win
With a couple of hours to spare in London Saturday
afternoon we dropped into the London Gardens to watch
the East London Manufacturing hockey league final
game won by Wolverine Tube over the Free Press.
Two valuable members of the winning Wolverines
team who took the series in seven games were former
Lucan Irish juniors Cec Nickles and Jerry Jongeneelen.
Most Playoffs Set
With most of the NHL teams still having nine or ten
games remaining in the regular schedule, playoff pair-
ings in three of the four division have already been
determined.
In the Smythe division the Edmonton Oilers who clin-
ched the title several weeks ago will meet the fourth
place Los Angeles Kings while the Calgary Flames and
Vancouver Canucks will tangle in the other series.
The Patrick division leading and defending champion
New York Islanders have also cinched top spot and
will go against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The New
Y ork Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, battling for
second place will meet in the semi-finals.
Playoff spots are also set in the Adams division where
the Montreal Canadiens, sure to finish first will play the
Quebec Nordiques while the Buffalo Sabres and Boston
Bruins will oppose each other.
Only in the Norris division are playoff matchups not
decided. The Minnesota North Stars will end on top but,
the other three spots are up for grabs.
Winnipeg appears to be heading for second place, but,
it looks like a real struggle between St. Louis and
Chicago for third. The team finishing fourth meets Min-
nesota in the 4irst round.
t
Oldtimers
win twice
The Exeter Otdtimers
scored two wins this week.
They blasted the Hensall
oldtimers 12-3 and edged
Varna 9-7.
In the win over Hensall,
Glenn Stire played an out-
standing game in goal to
keep the Hensall sharp-
shooters at bay.
Leading the scoring with
two goals apiece were Keith
Ahrens, Bob McDonald, Paul
Weido and Frank "Golden
Jet" Boyle. Checking in with
one goal each were Eric
Finkbeiner, Gord Slaght,
Pete McFails and Mike
Cushman. Jim Russell
picked up three assists.
Mike Cushman with a hat
trick performance led the
Exeter scoring in the win
over Varna. Pete McFalls
was close behind with a two
goal effort while Eric Fink-
beiner, Paul Weido, Jim
Russell and Bob McDonald
scored in single fashion.

BIER- ex'eier midgets netrpjn4ler Peter Dearing has been the biggest
factor in his team's playoff performa'n'ce to date in reaching the OMHA quarter-
final. He stopped a barrage of shots oh Friday night to help his mates to a 4-2
win and kept them close an Sunday when they lost 5-3 in Ohsweken. His team
will be hoping for a continued performance in tonight's deciding tilt. Above, Dear-
ing wipes the sweat from his brow after the game while being congratulated

second and again Exeter
came back to tie it up when
Brent Atthill scored from the
slot on a play with Tadgell
and Hern.
However, the roof fell in
then for the Exeter crew as
Six Nations regained their
one -goal lead only 21 seconds
later and then upped it to 4-2
16 seconds after that.
Exeter's effort to get back,
series
in the tilt was thwarted early
in the third when they ran
into penalty trouble with
three minors in succession
and while they held the at-
tackers off while playing
two -men short, Six Nations
got their fifth goal while
holding a one-man ad-
vantage.
Sean Whiteford whittled
the count to 5-3 with just over
four minutes remaining
when he was on the doorstep
to bang home a puck dropped
at his feet by the Six Nations
goalie on a shot by Tadgell.
Randy Ford also drew an
assist on the play.
Exeter continued to press
and went with an extra at-
tacker in the final minute
and a half but couldn't get
any closer.
GAME CLOSE — Exeter midgets leftwinger Steve Batten digs for a puck in the
Six Nations crease on Friday while his two line -mates, Scott Brintnell andiMike
Tiedeman move in to help out. The trio used the same effort to score the winn-
ing goal with one second left in the second period on a power ploy. Eric Tadgell
was the scoring star in the local's 4-2 win as he bagged a pair. Deciding game
in the series is tonight (Wednesday) at the rec centre. Staff photo
