The 1982 National Hockey League all star game
provided some of they best hockey and exciting action
since the recent Canada Cup games.
While both teams stuck to the basic principles of
hockey there was enough body contact to keep
everybody on the edge of their seats.
This year's event was one that will probably be
remembered the longest by the participants as they
were part of a couple of days activities in Washintgton
and at the White House.
It was great to see two of the best hockey players
ever to lace up their skates take part in the official
faceoff. Gordie Howe who took part in 23 all star con-
tests and Phil Esposito with 11 of the big games, behind
him werehelped by Canada's Ambassador to the
United States Ken Taylor.
Taylor who was very prominent in getting the US
hostages out of Iran has done a lot for Canadian -
American relations along with the hundreds of hockey
players who play for United States teams. Many stay
on as American citizens.
The television broadcast of the all star game show-
ed the reception at the White House with all the
players being introduced to president Reagan. At first
glance it would appear that' the US government spon-
sored the dinner and reception for the all star par-
ticipants.
But, apparently that is not true. Actually, the NHL
paid for everything and really rented the White House
and the president. Regardless of who took care of the
tab it added regal splendour to the annual game and at
a time when hockey's image isn't the greatest it cer-
tainly helped.
The first NHL all star game was held in 1947 and
was sort of an off -shoot of a number of benefit games
held in previous years.
The first benefit games were for the injured Ace
Bailey who almost lost his life when hit by Boston's
Eddie Shore and for the late Howie Morenz and Babe
Siebert. Both of these fine hockey players died when
they were still valuable members of the Montreal
Canadiens.
Local hockeyists doing well
A number of graduates of recent years from the
Exeter Minor Hockey Association are enjoying good
seasons in a variety of hockey leagues.
Dave Shaw, son of local mayor Bruce and Fran
Shaw is a valuable member of the Kitchener Rangers
in the Ontario Junior Hockey League.
The Rangers arenowin first place in their division
three points ahead of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Shaw is only one of three Kitchener players to appear
in every one of the teams 57 games to date.
Further information on Dave Shaw's career with
the Rangers appears elsewhere on these sports pages.
To American college ranks Paul and Perry Pooley
are in their second season with the Ohio State
Buckeyes and are again proving to be very valuable to
their team.
Paul who was named rookie of the year last year is
second in team scoring with 17 goals and 22 assists for
39 points.
Twin brother Perry has seven goals and the same
nuniber of assists. They have played in all 28 Buckeye
games.
At the same time Barry Baynham and Randy
Kraul, both of Exeter aresteadyperformers with the
Stratford Perths in the OHA Senior league. Kraul is a
graduate of the Lucan minor hockey system.
In addition Tom Coates is with Strathroy in the
OHA junior "B" league and DaveBogart plays with the
Wilfrid Laurier University hockey club.
Swiss team on tour
A junior hockey team from Switzerland is going to
be in this part of Western Ontario for a couple of
games.
The Swiss team makes its first appearance Sun-
day afternoon at the Zurich arena. The game with the
Zurich bantams supplying the opposition will get un-
derway at 2 p.m. with official opening ceremonies and
presentations.
The entire Zurich community is throwing support
behind this venture. Involved are the Chamber of
Commerce, Lions club, the recreation committee and
the village of Zurich.
An official dinner will be held after the game at
about 5:15 p.m.
The same team will be in Lucan on Wednesday,
February 24 to meet the Lucan bantams and again a
number of gifts will be exchanged by the two teams.
The village of Lucan will be presenting official village
pins to the visiting Swiss players.
Here are two chances for area hockey fans to see a
good European team in action.
Once in a lifetime
. If Exeter councillor Bill Mickle is walking around
these days with an unusual big smile on his face he has
just cause.
Mickle was the skip of a curling rink that chalked
up an eight -ender Saturday in the annual Valentine's
mixed bonspiel at the local curling club.
Bill with his wife Fran and Bill and Alice Walker
ended up with eight rocks in the house and his opponent
Al Rankin was unable to leave any in the cherished
circles.
The only other eight ender ever at the Exeter club
was back in 1967 when the feat was accomplished by
Harry Snell.
Minor baseball meeting .
A meeting of the Exeter Minor Baseball
Association has beenset for the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23.
Anyone interested in participating as a coach at
the house league level will be more than welcome.

Local youth successful
with Kitchener Rangers
Being named to the Emms
division all star team in his
first• year of Ontario Junior
Hockey league competition is
the biggest thrill in the career
of a graduate of the Exeter
minor hockey system.
Dave Shaw was named to
the all star team when two
original choices were out with
injuries and he took a regular
turn on defence throughout
the game.
Shaw in his first year with
the Kitchener Rangers is one
of only three players that
have participated in every
one of the 67 regular schedul-
ed games of the Rangers to
date.
Last season, he was with
the Stratford Cullitons after a
championshipyear with the
Exeter migets and was
selected by Kitchener in the
midget draft.
Dave, the son of Exeter
mayor Bruce Shaw and Fran
Shaw will celebrate his 18th
birthday on May 25 of this
year and will be eligible for
the under age NHL draft
which takes palce in June.
With theunior schedule
,heading for the home stretch,
NHL scouts and would-be
agents are attending every
game.
When asked which NHL
team he would prefer to be.
drafted by Dave replied, "I
would prefer Minnesota or
Pittsburgh, but, I guess would ,
be happy to go to any pro
Scouts from Pittsburgh,'
Quebec and Philadelphia
have shown an interest in the
Exeter youngster.
Currently the Kitchener
Rangers are in first place in
the Emms division with a
three point lead and a game
in hand over the strong Sault
Ste. Marie Greyhounds.'
The Rangers have won 11
and tied one of their last 13
games and appear to be ready'
for playoff competition and
Dave Shaw has held down a
regular spot on defence and is
used on the second shift of
power plays.
Shaw finds the big dif-
ference in the move from
Junior "B" to "A"' ranks is
the quickness of the game and
he added, "The game is a lot
rougher with more fighting."
Most Kitchener practices
consist of improving techni-
ques of bringing theuck out
of their own end and Shaw is
doing more of this as the
season progresses.
Dave has recently com-
pleted grade 12 studies at Kit-
chener Collegiate Institute
and is now beginning a grade
13 semester.
On the school situation he
commented, "I find it hard to
fit studies in with playing
hockey. It's difficult to study
on a bus and we do all of our
travelling that way."
After a big victory in Ot-
tawa Friday night, coach Joe
Crozier gave the whole team
