They may be lengthy essays, but usually they're poetic verses or simple one- liners, that make us stop, read them again and think. For exlample, an anonymous author pondered the thought: "If God Should Go On Strike." "How good i is that God above has n ver gone on strike: Because he was not treated faittti in things he didn't like. ; If only only once he'd given - up and said, That's it, I'm through!' I've had enough of those on earth, so this is what I'll do. I'l1 give my orders to the sun - cut off the heat supply! And to the moon - give no more light, and run the oceans dry. Then just to make things really tough and put the pressure ea, turn off the vital oxygen 'til every breath Is gone!' You know he would be justified, if fairness was the game. For no one has been more abused or met more disdain than God, and hurt to gain the things we like. But what a. mess we'd all be in, if God should go on strike." • Meanwhile Ralph Waldo Emerson left us some advice that is short and to the point: "Never try to make anyone ,''Kt s Odds 'n ends By Baine Townshend yet he carries on, supplying you and me with all the favours of His grace, and everything for free. Men say they want a better deat, so on strike they go. But what a deal we've given God to whom all things we owe. We don't care whom we MR. AND MRS. Weather seems to be on everyone's mind these days, but few rationalize it the way Ruskin did: "Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is exhilarating; there is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather." Making friends isn't easy, or is it? Here's a suggestion from Dale Carnegie: "You can make more friends in two months by becoming really Interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. Which is just another way of saying that the way to make a friend is to be one." Josh Billings defines man's best friend: "A dog is the only thing on this earth hat loves you more than he oyes himself." When asked what he onsidered the most 1 c notes essential qualification for a politi"Winston the ability ill said: "It's to foretell what will happen tomorrow, next month, and next year - and to explain afterward why it did not happen." We humans should stick up for ourselves in this age of automation. Someone said: "It may be4rue that human beings make more mistakes than computors, but, for a real foul-up, give us a computor anytime." Here's a piece of good advice: "Never argue with an angry person." Louis D. Brandeis is credited with the following view on the subject of arguing: "arguments seem futile to me, for behind every argument I have heard lies the astounding ignorance of someone."
