Midgets lead in playoffs
The Exeter midgets main-
tained their one -game lead
over St. Marys in OMHA
playoff when they split a
pair of weekend games with
the Stonetown crew, while
the local bantams were put
on the brink of elimination
and the pee wees dropped
their first playoff encounter,
The weather forced post-
ponement of Wednesday's
playoff games and resulted
in a couple of changes. It
was the second cancellation

virtue of a convincing 6-0
win in Exeter, Saturday.
The midgets and bantams
played the second game of
their series in St. Marys,
Saturday. and both teams
came home losers, while the
bantams lost again on Sun-
day and the midgets won.

midgets and bantams will be
hack in Exeter tonight

Midgets gat split
The midgets received
superb netminding from
Peter Dearing and scored on
their only two big oppor-
tunities on Sunday to post a
2-1 win over St. Marys to
take a 2-1 lead in their
playoff set. St. Marys won at
home on Saturday by a 4-1
count.
Steve Batten started the
locals off on the right foot in
Sunday's game when he
picked up a loose puck in the
St. Marys one and lifted a
high shot into the net on an
unassisted effort midway
through the first period.
St. Marys got that one
hack quickly as they evened
the count only 17 seconds
later.
With just over a minute
remaining in the second
period. Scott Brintnell
knocked down a loose puck
and skated in all alone on the
St. Marys net and his hard
shot was partially blocked

St. Marys, which carried
the play throughout the
game. were continually
thwarted by Dearing. His
mates also played a strong
defensive game over the
final 15 minutes to preserve
the win.
The. visitors pulled their
goalie in the l'st minute
with an Exeter player in the
penalty box to give them a
two-man advantage, but
Dearing and his four cohorts
held off the strong attack.
Only three penalties were
called In the fast-moving
contest, two to the visitors.
In Saturday's contest, the
teams traded goals in the
first period with Steve
Batten scoring for Exeter
off a face-off play with the
assists going to Scott
Brintnell and Mike Tiedntan.
The home team took a 2-1
lead late in the second on a
power play and sealed the
win with a goal midway
through the third and an in-
surance marker yith only 20
seconds left in the game.
Bantams face sidelines
The Exeter bantams will
face elimination when they
take to the ice at the rec cen-
tre tonight, trailing St.
Marys 3-0 in their best -of -
seven series.

The _Ontario Volleyball
Association's Volleyvan
program is now in its second
month of bringing national -
calibre volleyball to schools
and community groups in
Ontario.
During the month of
January, the Volleyvan
program, backed by Win-
tario, Gatorgum, and
Adidas, contacted almost 50
schools and gave volleyball
presentations to nearly six
thousand people. Throughout
February, Volleyvan will
reach an estimated sixty
schools and six thousand
people.
The Volleyvan clinic will
be at South Huron District
High School in Exeter on
Tuesday, February 16 from 9
to 11:30 a.m.
