Granton Foresters honor Dorothy Hern with two presents for achievement

The members of Court
Valentine Canadian
Foresters celebrated their
lief birthday with a pot luck
supper and euchre on.
February 2. This was held in
the Mason's Hall and each
member could bring her
husband or a friend and
another couple.
Following supper the
members and their guests
played a few games of
euchre. Prize winners were
high lady, Sis Sandra Hern
low lady. Cindy Taziar; high
man, Sis Inger Lemmon
playing as a man and low
man Sis Margory Mills
playing as ,a man. John
Herbert won the lone hands
prize.
The highlight of the
evening was the presentation
of a Forester pendant,
awarded. to Forester of the
Year, Dorothy Hern. This
presentation was made by
Bro. Percy White, .who was
the former Forester
of the year. Mrs. Hern was
also honored with a gift from
Court Valentine, this was an
exquisite dinner bell. It was
known that collecting bells
was" her hobby. The
presentation was made by
court president Sis Jean
McComb.
THE
Church news
At the United Church the
Rev. Elwood Morden con-
ducted the service and of-
ficiated at the sacrament of
Holy Communion.
This was the first of a
series on faith, and the
minister entitled his
message "Discovering What
Faith is." . ,
Faith is a word we hear
spoken countless times in
church. Faith is in context to
our own relationship to God.
Faith is unconditional
surrender to God.
At 'St. Thomas Anglican
Church the Rev. Greg Smith
was in charge of the morning
prayer service and officiated
at the 'Sacrament of Bap-
tism, when Philip Andre
Sterling Hodgins son of Jim
and Linda Hodgins and Tara
Mae ' Anne Westman,
daughter of Lyle and Jill
Westman were baptiied.
Godparents of Philip
Hodgins were Mr. and Mrs.
Kim Bedford and Tara
Westmai)'s godparents were
Kevin Dann, Bernie Giessen
and Linda Maslen.
The first lesson was read
by Kenny Beatson and Mrs.
Percy. Hodgins read the
second: Rev. Smith and Mrs.
Jim Hodginssang a duet with
accompaniment by the
.rector on his guitar.

Granton U.C.W. (1) met at!
the home of Mrs. Rbt Hardie
on February 3. In the ab-
sence of the president, Mrs.
Glen Jameson presided and
opened the meeting with a
hymn followed by the
Scripture and lesson
thoughts entitled "Beautiful,
Beautiful". The devotions
closed with prayer.
A report on the recent
UCW executive meeting was
given by Mrs. Jameson:
Members were reminded of
the presbyterial meeting
announced for Thursday,
February 11 at Wesley Knox
United Church in London,
the theme will be "Come as a
Child.
Mrs. Jameson was also in
charge of the program and
entitled her Meditation "The
problem of falling rocks."
The theme was taken from a
book of sermons by the late
Rev. Peter Marshall
The
point wait br out, that if
you are a Ilan and
believe in God, to worry is a
sin, and as to our problems of
falling rocks, in our lives,
worry won't help, but faith in
the power of God will.
Mrs. R. Hardie spoke
about the book she had
received from Mrs. Ruth
Munro, a former school
teacher in Granton. This
book was written by Mrs.
Munroon the life of her aunt,
Dr. Mina lillicKenzie while
she was it missionary in
India.
Mrs. Cliff Hardie was the
hostess for Unit 4. Mrs. Gary
Humphrey presided and
opened the meeting by
reading the scripture
followed by a reading en-
titled "Love and Friend-
ship".
During the business
period, the World Day of
Prayer was discussed, it is to
be held in the United Church
on Friday, March 5 with
Wesley United and St.
Thomas Anglican Church
contributing to the program.
The program for the
October general meeting
was discussed as Unit 4 is
responsible for the program.
A quilt was on display that
this Unit had completed for
the bazaar in October.
Mrs. Nelson Tate in-
troduced
ntroduced the new study book
and read the first chapter,
this entitled "Living Bet-
ween
etween Memory and Hope." A
discussion led by Mrs. Tate
followed. Mrs. H. Wissel
read the scripture passages
in connection with the study,
she also read a poem "Quit
Suppasin'." -
Mrs. Gerald Dann and
Mrs. Stanley Crawford
assisted the hostess to serve
lunch.
