Miscellaneous
Rumblings
By Rob Chester
Timbertown has no built-
in advantages.
We haven't watched a T -V
cartoon about loggers ' for
years, such as watching
Fred and Barney, and when
thinking romantically about
far off places, the exotic
lands of Siam and Medieval
England come to mind well
before 9 northern Ontario
logging camp.
Secondly, since we are
bending over backwards to
establish Canadian content,
will this content have the
same sugar coating the
Flintstones give to
cavemen?
Will we see burly lumber-
jacks in plaid shirts and to-
ques singing folksong with
will ever happen in the land
of peace, order and good
government, but if it ever
does they will always get
their man?
Or will we see it like it is?
Massive trucks roaring in
and out of provincial parks
lopping off every tree in
sight, except for the few that
obscure the view from the
highways, allowing tourists
to wonder at the vast ex-
panses of virgin forests?
The second problem is the
lack of character. With the t
possible exception of Paul a
Bunyan (who is American) r
and Bruno Gerrusi (who is t
British Columbian, or h
Greek) do we have an iden-
tifiable logging hero? G
Or will we face reality and
further promote Bob and
Doug Mackenzie?
The beaver and the maple
leaf are symbols of our Coun-
try, but the Timbertown
theme doesn't exactly mesh
with preservation of wildlife
and flora.
Recent discussions in-
volving the Hensall BIA and
the Zurich Chamber of
Commerce indicate people
in this area (the merchants
anyway) would like some
sort Of attraction to boost
their town and ``revenue.
Blyth has beeh"put on the
map by the summer festival,
and Grand Bend has boosted
to its attraction by adding
theatre to the beach at-
mosphere.
The Bean Festival does a
credible job in Zurich, but
really only fora day.
The architect of Hensall's
Business Improvement
Area, Nick Hill, didn't like
the T -A's suggestion Co
design the "new" Hensall
around its own built-in
hemes. But maybe council
nd the BIA board will
ethink its plans in light of
he massive government
andouts to theme parks.
