A good time was had by all
the hockey fans over the
weekend as Garden City
teams from Michigan played
against the Zurich's kids
team. And were billeted out
at various homes in town
with the hockey players,
while parents stayed at
Motels in the Grand Bend
area. Games were played on
Saturday afternoon and
evening and Sunday. The
grown ups had a dance
Saturday night.
DMSA meet
The GMSA girls enjoyed
going ice skating on a pond
at the home of Pearl Ann
Martin last Monday night
then over to Gladys
Gingerich place to warm up
with some sloppy joes to eat.
Profitable dance
The skating club officials
are happy to report that they
made a profit of over $850 at
their recent dance.
The winner of the afghan
was Audrey Haberer.
"Save your pennies to help
make a mile of pennies".
There will be jars to put
them in at various stores
around town. So drop a few
in as everyone counts. Just a
little idea the club has to
make some money to help
defray expenses.
Plans are now underway
for the carnival that will be
held on Sunday, March 21.

Golden Agers meet
Close to 40 members and
visitors of the Zurich Golden
Agers were in attendance at
the Township Hall, for their
January meeting held over
from last week, due to
stormy weather.
The meeting opened with 0
Canada and praying the
Lord's prayer in unison.
Due to the absence of our
president Harry McAdams,
Lottie Gascho took over, and
welcomed everyone present.
The minutes of the
December meeting were
read by Lyda Gandier, Lottie
also gave the treasurer's
report, which followed by a
lively discussion.
Gen Doyle then ,reported
on upcoming bus trips.
Happy birthday was sung
for several members with
January birthdays, after
which they paid according to
their age, which amounted to
a nice sum.
The January committee
then took over, with con-
vener Verlyn Fisher and her
group, Gerry Kane read a
poem on the New Year,
resolutions, etc, which
followed by Verlyn Fisher
reading two lively poems on
getting old, after which
lunch was served and the
afternoon finished off, . by
playing euchre, solo and
bridge.
Everyone reported a very
pleasant afternoon outing.
Golden Glimpses
The stormy days certainly
cut down on the planned ac-
tivities for the home and it
seems we just can't have a
weekend without a storm
thrown in.
Movies were shown on
Monday evening followed by
refreshments.
We welcome Mr. Jacob
Deichert to the home. He is
formerly of the village of
Zurich.
Residents are busy in the
hobby shop these days. and
the Ladies Auxiliary have
just completed their quilt for
the draw to take place at the
Zurich Bean Festival.
Tickets will be available
from any of the Auxiliary
members. also here at the
home in the future.
We could make use of bits
and pieces of quilt bats if you
happen to be spending your
long wintery days quilting
and binding them. '1'he small
clippings of the quilt bat and
of course larger pieces
would also be acceptable for
our use in stuffing our small
animals, etc.
Now we have a new piano
in the dining room which has
been made available to the
residents through the New
Horizons' grant. Our other
piano has been moved to the
recreation room in the adja-
cent apartments for use of
the residents there.
Bingo was played on Fri-
day evening followed by
refreshments.
Due to the storm, our
scheduled minister for the
Sunday .evening chapel ser-
vice was absent. Mr. Lloyd
Morgan conducted the
worship service in his
absence. Mrs. Losetta
Fahrner presided at the
piano during the service.

By MARY CHESSEI
Varna
The annual skating party
at the Varna rink, sponsored
by the Stanley Recreation
Commission, will be held on
Saturday at 7:00 p.m. There
will be prizes awarded for
costumes and other
categories, and
refreshments will be
available in the hall adjacent
to the rink.
Spring dance
Here is something to note
on your calendar: the
Recreation Commission spr-
ing dance will be in Hensall
on April 10.
Congregation meets
The annual meeting of
Varna United Church con-
gregation was held on Mon-
day. Jan. 25 with a good
attendance.
Rev. Wilena Brown
chaired the meeting, and
Bill McAsh was recording
secretary. There are
seventy-two households on
the mailing list.
Total membership is 138,
of which 97 reside in this
area. j
During the past year one
person transferred out of
Varna and two members
were received by transfer.
There was one funeral, five
baptisms and one wedding.
Julie Webster reported
there' are 32 on the Sunday
School membership roll.
There are fourteen
Messengers.
The Youth Group has dis-
banded and is turning over
their funds to the two
churches, -with Varna's
share going towards the new
table which was purchased
for the back of the church.
The C.G.I.T. is inactive at
present. Their walk-a-thon
was very successful, and
8274.31 was given to the
Thames Valley Children's
Centre for special toys and a
tutorgram.
U.C.W. reports were given
by Doris Wilson and
Margaret Hayter and in-
dicated a busy year, as
usual.
The church's financial
reports, given by treasurer
Bernice Reid, showed a
favourable balance. The
manse was insulate4 last
year, and eavestrough and
fascia boards repaired. The
stewards were given the go-
ahead to have the wall at the
back of the church repaired.
A committee was appointed
to purchase a Gestetner to
replace the present one
I which has never worked
satisfactorily.
Ivan McClymont is the
new elder on session. The
Board of Trustees remains
the "same, and there were
nominations to the Board of
Stewards, subject to their
acceptance of office. Bob
Stirling and Bill Taylor were
re -appointed as auditors.
The treasurer's
honorarium was Increased
by $25. Alvin Keys and Jim
Kirton are on the Manse
Committee, Murdock
Morrison and Bernice Reid
on Ministry and Personnel,
Ivan McClymont is chair-
man of the Christian Educa-
tion Committee. The every
family plan for the Observer
will be retained.
Appreciation was express-
ed for the help Rev. Brown
receives from Linda Linfield
in carrying out office duties,
and to Rev. Brown forher
excellent minstry.
On Sunday, Julie Webster,
a piano student of Marjorie
Hayter for the past two
years. was the organist for
the children's hymn. It's en-
couraging to see young peo-
ple capable of filling the:
needs of our church in years
to come.
Please remember the
U.C.W. meeting at 7:30 on
Thursday.
