A fascinating hobby

Collecting bottles can be a
ttg hobby that keeps
a person occupied all year
long. as I discovered when I
met a collector a few years
ago.
II also learned that bottle
work involved. lncidentially
it doesn't mean emptying
bottles first. Rather it
means digging for hours and
travelling miles to flea
markets and auction sales
to find bits of history.
Odds 'n ends
collecting has become the
third largest hobby in North
America, surpassed only by
s mps and coins, and in
-Great Britain it is quickly
surpassing the favourite
British pastime of stamp
collecting.

Local dumps, excavation
sites and riverbanks are
logical spots to dig, but digg-
ing alone can be dangerous.,
Dumps especially can be
tricky. An avid bottle collec-
tor will spend a vacation in
an exotic clime scuba diving
or digging for a unique

The. Hurondale W.I. met
'January 27 at the Usborne
Central School with
president Mrs. -Glen Stewart -
in charge.
The meeting opened with
singing the Opening Ode
followed by repeating the
Mary Stewart Collect.
Roll call was answered by
mempers bringing a kitchen
article that would make
music. The correspondence
and minutes were read and
approved and business
followed. Voted to donate $35
toward prizes at the Exeter
Fair.
Also a donation was made
to Save the Sight Fund and a
motion to send a delegate to
the Officers Conference held
in May at Waterloo College.
The names of .the leaders
for the seven 4-H clubs were
read and Mrs. Carfrey Cann
was the lucky winner of the'
quilt made. Some of the
ladies volunteered to help
quilt the two crib quilts that
were donated.
The February meeting is
to be held in Caven Church
with dessert served at 1:15
p.m. with meeting to follow.
Mis, Anne Brodie con-
vened the program' with a
musical sing song using the
kitchen articles brought for
the band, which was enjoyed
by all.
Mrs. Laura SUlery gave
the motto. The best
preparation for tomorrow is
the good use of today. The
hidden orchestra and a
musical contest was held
naming different in-
struments, after which a
dainty lunch was served by
the committee in charge.

Finding a bottle is just the
first step. Each bottle must
be carefully cleaned and.
polished to return it as close-
ly as possible to its original
state.
Nex4 the bottle must be
identified and valued. After
extensive research through
the several bottle books
available. the bottle is
catalogued and put on dis-
play.
Inevitably every collector
must decide which bottles to
keep and which bottles to
sell to finance the rest of his
collection. Trading is
another means by which he
can add to his display. A
collector soon becomes ac-
quainted with a network of
bottle fanciers ready to
wheel and deal as well as to
share experiences.
To a collector, there's
nothing more beautiful than
an old bottle cleaned inside
and out. To a visitor, there's
nothing more fascinating
than studying shelves and
shelves of gleaming bottles
in peculiar shapes and sizes
and varying colours.
Each bottle has a story. A
pumpkin seed or picnic flask
- a bottle shaped -like a flask
reminds us of the horse and
buggy days. 'Mg bottle
would be filled -with a "war-
ming" liquid. corked and
carried in a man's pocket or
a lady's bag.
A tiny cologne bottle one -
inch in length and one-
quarter inch in diameter and
another perfume bottle in
the shape of an elephant
takes us backuto the days of
the five-and-dime stores.
At the other end of the size
spectrum. a three or four
magnum cone or two gallon)
French champagne bottle
complete with cork and label
can be turned into a func-
tional and intriguing lamp.
Torpedo -shaped bottles,
made around 1870, contained
a mixture of fruit flavouring
rand soda water called soda
drink - the ,forerunner of
soda pop and today's soft
d inks. A fairly modern
Cdire bottle with an Arabic
label commemorates the end
of the to drought in
Egypt.
Small medicine bottles
contained in a rectangular
leather case conjure up a
picture of a country doctor
on his rounds in a horse and
buggy.
'Wandering through a
collector's display and hear-
ing the story behind each'
"find" explains the fascina-
tion that lures many people
into the hobby of . bottle
collecting.
