Times-Advocate, 1982-02-03, Page 5May be reduced next year Winter. Daze proves successful "Winter Daze", South Huron's winter carnival, was termed a success by event organizers despite it's ddiita st ppppointing conclusion, ' "Overall it was really good, but the dance and activities were rather an- ticlimactic," said sudent council president, Bruce Shaw. Student council ad- visor, Wally Webster, suggested that next years council may consider discontinuing the activities on Saturday and reducing the carnival to a three day event. "On Saturday, many students have jobs or are otherwise occupied," he noted. Treasurer Dave Wpod- ward reported that finan- cially the event was a suc- cess as the student's council broke even. "We were planning to lose some money and hoping to break even at best," he said Monday. Despite a $321 loss on Saturday's dance, the council broke even because of large audiences at the Mike Mandel performance and the movie "Airplane". Small, but enthusiastic crowd for SHDHS dance A small but enthusiastic crowd of close to 150 students bopped to the music of Toronto-based band and BB Gabor at a Saturday night dance that concluded South Huron's "Winter Daze". Gabor, the band's leader and founder, was impressed with South . Huron students who, in his mind seemed cite willin to have a ood time. "They start leaping around as soon as they pick up a rhythm. It's nice to play for people that aren't drunk for a change." he said. The band has been playing the bar circuit recently. • of three starters in the tournament semi-final as they were beaten 48-18 by the - Blue Bombers of Ingersoll. The Panthers committed 36 turnovers against, Ingersoll's overpowering press. Brent Atthill had four points. The team travels to Goderich Friday where they, will try and avenge an earlier exhibition loss. Formed in 1978, BB Gabor found, success in 1979 with the release of their first album, which sold 30,000 copies in Canada. The hit song from the album, "Nyet, Nyet, Soviet", Which the band used as a finale to their performance at South Huron, is a fervent protest of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Classified as a "new wave" group after their•recording effort, "Girls of the Future", the groups mellower second album, has left some listeners confused. "It's . definitely a different sounding - album. It represents a metamorphasis in my songwriting style. I don't like being categorized as just new -wave", said Gabor. Born in Budapest, Hungary, then eight-year old Gabor and his family fled to. London, England during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. It was here, as a teenager in the: early 1960's that he received his in- troduction to rock and roll music. Although he taught himself how to play guitar, Gabor received his vocal training in a church choir. Gabor, as can be expected, is very concerned and sympathetic for the people of Poland. "It's another round in a neverending war of oppression. People have a right to freedom and as an artist I have to believe in POLAR BEAR RACERS were participants in the Judi Van Oss, Susan MiCIure, Jamie Chaffe and Alice Dietrich "Go Bahamas Day" polar bear race at SHDHS. Juniors get blown away • "They blew us away in the third quarter," said Derek Hippern, after the South Huron juniors' 59-38 loss to Stratford Northwestern at home, Friday. after leading 22-20 at halftime, the Pan- thers were outshot in the third period by the un- defeated Huskies. The Panthers host Wingham today and travel to Goderich Friday, where they will put their 4-1 record on the line. ' "It will be closer this time," said coach Terry O'Rourke, whose team lost a thirty point decision to the Vikings in. an earlier exhibition meeting. Derek Hippern had ten points and Steve Ferguson added eight points in the juniors' loss to Stratford. The midgets lost their game to Northwestern by a 51-43 count. • • • • • • • • Girls volleyball team in first spot The South Huron senior girls volleyball team's five wins in six games at Thur- sday's tournament in Clinton establishes them in first place in the Huron league with a 10-4 record. Today the team travels to Goderich for the second last tournament of the regular season. The scores were as follows– Goderich, 15-10, 15-9; Madill, 15-8, 15-7; Clinton ,9-15, Faye Gaiser and Patti Willis led the Panther's centre attack that the op- positionwasunable to defend against. "With a centre attack, you usually only have one blocker to hit over," said coach Joe Fulop. The team played well on defence, with several members registering near perfect bumping percentages. Joan Cooper had a 95; per cent ball handling scor :."rile Cheryl 'Cann had her most con- sistent tournament of the season with a 93 per cent score. Uninspired play typified South Huron's games at home Thursday against Seaforth. Nevertheless, the Panthers won 4 of'5 of the exhibition matches. Poor blocking and a general lack of intensity resulted in sloppily played matches. Saturday, at a tournament in Strathroy, the team won 6. of 10 games they played: Linda - Mathonia played her best game this season in the tournament. Fulop played everyone on the team in the tournament so that the team will be ready for today regular season tournament. Four of six starters will be away on the ski trip.
