EXETER GRAND BEND 235-2420 238-8484 CLINTON 482-9747 • Old fashioned Christmases from Grandpa's time By Karen Schenk Room 10-E.P.S. Ma called up the stairs, "Children, wake up." I could smell the bacon frying. It smelt good. I slipped into my dress and hurried down the stairs. My brother was probably still in bed. Good! maybe I could sneak into the parlour and see what I got. Ma and Pa had gone into town yesterday but never told us what they had got. Then Ma said, "Hurry on, now We haven't got all clay- "We have to go to Aunt Martha's you know." ''Yes. Mama." I said. "Go get your brother". said ma. "Be quick about it 1 ran up the stairs. "I'm up, I'm up!" said a voice from under the covers. I ran downstairs into the kitchen and started to put bacon on my plate but Pa said, "Wait until your brother gets down here." "Yes. Pa." I said. My brother came down looking like he just woke up (which was true). We finish- ed our breakfast and had our baths. got dressed and left for Aunt Martha's. When we got there. we hugged and kissed. Then we ate turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin, pie Then we went to the Christmas tree and each of us kids was lucky and got an orange. My brother got a beautiful jack-knife and I got the most beautiful doll. She had blond hair. blue eyes that had real eyelashes and when you touched her in the stomach she cried out, "Mamh". I named her Chrissy. This hristmas was a beautiful hristmas I thought. HOW MY GRANDPARENTS USED TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS By Karen J. Miller Osborne Central When my Grandparents were small, Christmas was celebrated much the same as we do today, but they didn't spend as much money for they didn't have It to spend. Sotne had no Christ- mas tree for there was no hydro and therefore no lights. Unless you had some trees in your bush to cut, you didn't buy one. The family always came home for Christmas. The meals consisted of goos, chicken or duck, raised on the farm. Homemade bread and butter. pudding, candy and popcorn. Everything was homemade and not bought. ' The gifts were small but useful. If needed, you receiv- ed a knitted sweater, scarf, mitts. or socks, of course, made by mother or grand- ma. Some toys were tin horns. or drums, books, a doll. Jack knife or a dresser set. They only received one or two things at home. They drew names at school, and bought something for their teacher. The teacher bought something for each student. They didn't draw names at home. On Christmas Eve my one grandpa went to the Church Christmas program in the bob sled. My Grandma had to go to bed early before San- ta came. but before going, they hung their stockings on the back of a chair and made Santa some lunch. My grandparents always enjoyed singing Christmas carols around the old organ and later the piano:, I believe my Grandparents had as much fun at Christ- mas time, when they were small. as we do today. The Christmas tradition is still carried on today, and will continue many more years to come. MY GRANDPA'S CHRISTMAS By Jeff Playfoot Room 10-E.P.S. When my Grandpa was lit- tle he didn't have a tree until he was ten. When he did get 'one he decorated it with pop- corn. ornaments, coloured paper and on the top there was an ,angel. For presents he got homemade candy, caramel popcorn balls, blocks and games. His favourite present was a game of Parcheesi. When it was dinnertime he and his family had goose or duck, dressing, vegetables, gravy and potatoes. I wouldn't want to be at Grandpa's Christmas because there wouldn't be enough money to buy good gifts back then. eAe►tAd,►t;iie pre►Aiie+tJis►pveeii►pit►prp aia►,ltiapiirtki►piin 61; JOHN DEERE TOYS From Pedal Driven riding tractors to Titan combines, John Deere action toys ore designed to make kids happy. T -A photo LONG AGO AT CHRISTMAS By Shelly Black Room 10-E.P.S. • A long time ago at Christ- mas they didn't get many presents like we do today. They usually hung up a stocking and got a few things like an orange or a tangerine. Their Christmas dinner was somewhat like the one we have on Christ- mas except they usually had goose instead of turkey. A long time ago. they did not have aritificial Christmas trees so they had to go the forest and cut one down. They decorated the tree with red and green paper. paper snowflakes and sometimes real candles for lights From Santa they usually got one or two presents and one from their parents and if they were lucky they might get one from an aunt or uncle. Today it is not like that at all because we are spoiled. eecs ean+acter'tl?nerTnoa me n n snepn — met 11P". ct+srsewva el"11"et am ezrna"n .41.etvttleAetreltnmrtsee8 I g I _ 1 )/i//J1k"Y (il//Jt///?J ty I NW it OPMAP fede I I ws tlof i I g I 1rad AA The First Canadian Bank Bank of Montreal SEVEN BRANCHES SERVING YOU Exeter - Hensall - Grand Bend - Luton-- Zurich Dashwood - Crediton Co.as arm Nee tun ' IM»NimAkisk Miwlki.fl0'w4M.Aii. f 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 anta zooms in, his pack filled to overflowing with joy, peace, and contentment for all.
