Times-Advocate, 1981-12-22, Page 9Hockey squads in giving mood Christmas was marked early by two Exeter minor hockey squads in their Shamrock league action against St: Marys at the rec centre, Wednesday. In the first game, the Exeter bantams got a gift from St. Marys but then promptly returned it as they dropped a 6.5 decision. After trailing through most of the game, the locals tied the contest with a minute and a half remaining when the St. Marys net - minder tossed the puck into his own net as he attempted 141' - to toss it into the corner of the arena. With only 40seconds remaining, St. Marys came back into the Exeter end and after goalie Rick Gilfillan stopped the shot, one of his own mates had the misfortune to direct the puck back into the net to give the visitors the win. Scoring for Exeter were Jim Lewis, Tim Easter - brook, Sean Whiteford, Scott Lovie and Steve Gould. Christmas in 1893 or maybe 1912 By Patty O'Toole Precious Blood Grade 6 Look at the presents under the tree, And here comes Grandma walking very, very slowly Come here, sit down and tell me of Christmas in 1893. Well it wasn't that long ago, T'was 1912 or so, That I would kiss the boys under the miseltoe. Before that in my childhood, we would. Sing carols as loud as we could!' All the night we'd sing and dance, And string popcorn, but soon We had to go to midnight Mass. When we finally went home, I would lick the foam Off moma's hat - chocolate. But still bit by bit The tension grew, Oh I knew, I would never sleep, I'd just lay awake to keep, An eye on Santa Claus. And when the morning came around, We would scrounge until we found, Our presents that we give or get, But still we never did forget, The biggest gift of all! A very, very small baby boy! Born without a single toy, Or nothing like what you now have, But he was and had love, And like a dove, Ever so innocent. When he left home, He went along and gathered up some friends, He gave his life to us! The baby's name is Jesus, you know After the presents were all put away, We would sit down and pray CIL * 'AGn the f t' ti,"lit lit t V ` It * . *: 48, cti Gli vi As Santa jingles your way og bringing all the • treasures of the holiday, we join him In wishing you a host of bright G, Christmas memories to Gil► shine through this Clg it merry, merry season,_ Gig f 0 r ,1,43 zlft ti Jim and Jessie Ross and Staff al iS E tL 11,3 It le) T 10loccouncimounctoccoccomovuouncomot D M A N S 1' Thank the Lord for our life And me, for Miss Fife, The pup I got from Mom. FARMBOY'S CHRISTMAS By Ron Walker Precious Blood Grade 6 My grandpa told me stories boy you couldn't find a better storyteller. But about the best story he ever told me was the story of how he spent X-mas. He'd sit down and "Well" he'd say "Before X-mas and during the winter we'd skate in the bush around the the trees and if the forest floor wasn't frozen we skate on a pond." "And then" he'd say. "We'd go toboganning at the steepest hills." "Then...on X-mas Eve we'd get ready for midnight Mass." "Yes and we'd hitch up the horses to the cutter, put sleigh bells on them and go gliding across the. snow." "When Mass was over we'd invite our friends and neigh- bours over for some fun we'd open one present each". "Lord what fun we'd have "Then he'd say "We'd have to go to bed knowing that we'd never get to sleep, but somehow the caroling started ringing softly in our ears and eventually we fell asleep. "On X-mas morn we'd get up and run downstairs and open our presents. Boy what fun we'd have.
