ONC1 UPON A CHRISTMAS
by Danny Weigand
Zurich i.S. aides
The crackling fire woke me,
I quickly jumped out of bed,
1 ran into the Ilving-room,
To see a tree instead.
The tree was heavily,
With lots of home-made
things,
Which made my eyes a -
spark le.
As 1 saw the popcorn rings.
Christmas pudding in the
stove,
Fruits and nuts in a dish,
Father sitting in a chair,
Admiring his Christmas
wish.
These are all the Christmas
things,
That happened in the days of
old.
When my Grandpa was a
boy.
So the story has been told.
UPPER CANADA CHRISTMAS
IN 1850
By Denis Hartman
St. Boniface Grade 8
As they all watched,
mother set out the treats for
the next day, Christmas. A
goose' fro* out of the
storage. cranberries,
blueberries and
blackberries. Bread,
potatoes and honey were all
put out.
Early next morning we all
gathered around the hearth.
Times were hard so the
older ones were not expec-
ting anything. but everyone
got something: from an
apron. to a sled to a wooden
doll. The day began, father
kept the stove going. while
mother cooked the goose for
the evening meal.
The children played and
admired their gifts. As soon
as supper was over with
everyone stuffed to their
ears and chores done, they
all sang a few carols and
went to bed. Each one look-
ing forward to next year's
Christmas.
