Times-Advocate, 1981-10-15, Page 11Senior cagers unbeaten with two wins this past week. "We fast-breaked better than we have all year", coach Terry O'Rourke said about his team's win. Wednesday, against Strat- ford Central, 45.38. Mala Gans had 17 points and several assists for a strong team performance. The scoring was balanced as Carrie Sweeney, Lori Brand and Faye Gaiser each had eight points. O'Rourke didn't change the plays but he did change their numbers, Thursday, as the Panthers defeated Sea - forth 43-29. Seaforth had studied South Huron's offences in a weekend tournament so O'Rouke switched numbers to confuse them. However, the change wasn't really necessary as Gans had 20 points to help South Huron to the win. Lori Brand, the team's leading riibounder, showed con- fidence in her shooting game Thursday as she pumped in 11 points. The team will be trying to preserve their 11-2 overall record when they host Medway tomorrow at 4:00 and Saturday at a tourna- ment in Woodstock. Cross country meet today The South Huron crosscountry team travelled to three meets last week to prepare for today's South Huron Invitational. Courses start and end at the high school and traverse varying terrain along the Ausable River. The meet which will feature over 10 teams is a preview of next week's Huron -Perth Championships to be held on the same course. Monday, at the South Invitational in Springbank Park, midgets Irene Dietrich and Colleen Regier were second and fourth to lead the team to a second place finish. Matt McClure was sixth as the senior boys placed third in the team standings. In Dorchester, Wednesday Mike Van Raay was sixth and Jim Regier ninth to give the senior boys the team championship John Van Esbroeck was third in junior boy's competition. Alice Dietrich was eighth and Susan Birmingham was ninth as the junior girls were third as a team. On a tough, hilly course at the Octoberfest Invitational in Kitchener, Friday, Irene Dietrich and Colleen Regier were tenth and fifteenth respectively. The junior girls team was sixth in the meet at which over 1,500 runners and 52 schools competed on the hills of the Chicopee Ski Club. Susan Birmingham and John Van Esbroeck were 41st and 40th in the junior divisions. Matt McClure was 25th in senior boys. T -A photo Host Irish Friday Hawks score third straight win The Exeter Hawks rang up their third straight exhibition win this week, beating their perennial rivals from Lucan and Mitchell. The locals open their regular season at home this Friday when they tackle the Irish and Coach Ron Bogart will have a strong com- plement of veterans when he sends the squad into the ice at the rec centre. Only five new faces will be in the litieup, along with a couple of veterans who did not see action last year. They are Dave Bogart who played university hockey and Kerry Bedard, the Zurich speedster who has returned after one season with the Zurich Buckeyes. The rookies who picked up spots on the team are defencemen Jamie Chaffe and Steve Prout from the local midgets, Zurich midget star Paul Johnston, Huron Park's Tony Underhill and goalie Mike Tadgell. Tadgell. Tadgell formerly played in the Strathroy system and now resides in Grand Bend. The Hawks whipped their namesakes from Mitchell by a 12-6 count at Huron Park, Friday, and then came home to the rec centre to edge the Irish 5-3, Sunday. All-star defenceman Bill Glover was the scoring star in both games. He picked up a hat trick against the Hawks and then turned in a one-man scoring parade on Sunday as he blasted four shots into the Lucan net. Doug Brooks, Paul Johnston and Dave 'Whin added a pair each against Mitchell, while singles were fired by Dave Couse, Steve Prout and Preston Dearing. Jamie Chaffe and Couse had three assists each to lead in that department, while Dave Underwood, Dearing and Scott Pincombe added a pair each. Recording single assists were Larry Dawson, Bryan Baker, Tony Underhill and Dan Bell. The Panthers led in the third quarter. but fell behind when centre Charlene Verbeek fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Jackie Cot- trell, Janet Pfaff and Verbeek each had 6 points in the losing effort. Rowe categorized her team's play as "rather ragged" in their game Thursday against Seaforth. Nonetheless. when the team ran their offence, they were able to score regularly. Brenda Bell had 15 points and Janet Pfaff had 8 points to help South Huron to its third regular season win. Although the team lacks poise at this time, Rowe feels this will come as the first year players become accustomed to the high school game. In a tournament in Wingham recently, the juniors had two easy games to reach the final. In the first round. South Huron downed. Clinton 58-6 and then beat Wiarton 60-17 in the semi- final. With only 30 minutes rest after the semi-final the juniors ran out of steam against Stratford Northwestern in the final and lost. 33-25.
