A goodly number of area farmers were absent due to bean harvesting operations with. excellent weather con- ditions prevailing. Despite the absence of some of the farming com- munity the crowd was much better than a year ago when it rained and rained and rained throughout fair day. Fair secretary Deborah Webb commented, "The weather was really too nice this year, but, it was sure better than last year." The fair started with a good parade and official opening ceremonies featur- ing fair president Christine Eveleigh and a number of visiting dignitaries. The Kirkton Women's Institute with a Western motif won the best decorated float award followed by Snow White and the Winter Carnival. In the marching category the winners were the Scouts, Cubs, Pathfinders, Kirkton Komets and the Mitchell Band. Taking the best decorated 1 car prizes were Bob Rice, Gwen and Wendy Coward Iland Harold and Gladys Cud - more, while clown awards went to Deb Chappel, Beth Brandt and Lisa Ulch. The Brownies, Guides, Beavers and Winter Car- nival committee were winners in the junior decorated category while Diane O'Shea, Harold and Gladys Cudmore and Clare - Brandt won with comic vehicles. In the junior parade divi- sion Karen Foster, Bonnie Hartwick and Dale Switzer had the best decorated bicycles and Mark Foster, Judy Chappel and Doug Chappel won with their decorated tricycles. Many area youngsters par- ticipated in the pet show and winners were Gerald Cook, Beth Williams, Sherry Mor- ning, Trina Mills, Marney Bearss, Steven Selves, Susan Selves and Richard Spearin. Carol Willis was crowned junior baking Queen and was also named Princess of the Pumpkin Patch for gaining the most points in the junior vegetable section. Entries were scarce in the fruits section. Winners were Harold Burgin, Vi O'Brien and Sheila Miller. The winner in the senior baking class was Toots Lod- dington and Sheila Miller was best in the canning. department. Mrs. Thomas Hern .won the best quilt competition sponsored by Canada Packers, and Rosemary Schaefer took top prize for the best quilted item other than a quilt. They both won prizes from Miller's Barn. The top flower exhibitor was Gloria Cockwill with the top house plant awards going to Rosilyn Switzer and Marianne Ferguson. Janet Parkinson won the L.A. Ball special for winning the most points in the ladies work home department. Diane Willis, Lisa Hern and Dale Switzer were winners of prizes from the Beta Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Exeter for public school students on a science or socit, studies theme. - •--. In the cattle competition, the dairy champion was Jane Simpson with Diane Willis taking the reserve and in showmanship Janet Hartwick was the senior and grand champion with Steve Thompson taking the junior title. In beef cattle, Dan Shute showed the champion steer calf under two years of age and Tim Walker had the reserve champion while Ken Ross was the winner in the heifer section. In the field crops competi- tion. Ken Bearss was the winner in white beans and corn while Ross Robinson was the winter wheat winner.
