Times-Advocate, 1981-09-16, Page 11At Nairn Gunners win B Exeter Gunners travelled to Nairn Saturday to- take part In the squirt division playoffs. The first game to decide who goes into A or B divisions saw the Gunners meet League leading A.C. Nairn. Nairn jumped into a 3-0 lead by half time but could not extend the lead In the second hall. The Gunners mounted attack after attack but could not get a goal. Final result 3-0 for Nairn and the Gunners were In the "B" Division. In "B" Division play the Gunners were drawn against Lucan II and got an early lead when Jeff Burton scored • his first goal of the season. With the goal the whole team sensed they could win and really exerted pressure getting 2 more goals, both Centennials win final league tilt Despite not playing up to par the Exeter senior Centennial soccer team managed to beat Taxandria B's 2-1. The Centennials were able to control most of the play in the first half but never managed to get a good shot on net. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. In the second half, The Centennials played a bit sloppy but managed to score the first goal as forward John Muller let go a long shot which bounced over the hands of the Taxandria goalie. It didn't take long for Taxandria B to tie the score as they came back minutes later. The Centennials got a break just before the end of the game as winger Terry Vandewalle passed to ventre We'll Do the Job Fight... `"�■�! Whatever the project, call on us for forward Paul Vandewalle in front of the net who in turn made no mistake on his shot to end the game at 2-1 for Exeter This was the final game for Exeter before entering the league playoffs. All the league gmae results are not in yet but Exeter had a good chance of finishing third out of the seven teams, behind Taxandria A and Nairn. The playoffs start next weekend with the exact time and opoponent unknown at press time. To pay for referees, equipment and ad- ministration costs the senior soccer club held a draw . Heywood finished off the scoring with his first hattrick in the second half. The final game saw the Gunners play Grand Bend. This became a tough grinding game in which Exeter had most of the play. Ryan I.indenfield saw his efforts bounce off the goalkeeper and the post and Jason Hern had one picked off his toes by an alert goalkeeper. It seemed the Gunners could not buy a goal until they were awarded a free kick and placed it right at the feet of Jason Heywood who made no mistake tucking it home. Play continued very tight in the second half after Exeter replaced David Sch- midt in net with Jason Heywood. Grand Bend put on some good pressure but Heywood was equal to the task and tried extra hard to protect his one goal lead. Towards the end of the game the Gunners grew stronger and kept the play in Grand Bend thanks to ex- cellent midfield play by Jason Hern, Peter McAllister anc. Richard Phillips. Any chance that Grand Bend gat was snufffed out by full back Darryl Beaver who played the game of his life in back field. One of his clearing passes was picked up byDavidSch- windt and relayed -towards the Grand Bend net where a scramble for the ball ended when Jeff Burton slid into the mess of players and played the ball home for his second on the day and the insurance goal. Final result 2-0 for Exeter which gave them the B Division trophy. WHO BATS FIRST? — The Exeter Greys ladies fastball team defeated the Exeter firemen 8-6 in an exhibition game Thursday night. T -A photo Ironwood season ends with corn roast, barbecue The final men's golf tournament of the season at the Ironwood course was held Sunday with prizes and trophies being awarded prior to a pork and corn barbecue. Steve Pearce won the "A" flight gross score cham- pionship with a 73 and Iver Small with a 70 took net honours. Next in line in low gross were Paul Van Gerwen, AI Oakes, Jim Russell and Dave Holtzman while Bob Fletcher, Don Gifford, Brad Murray and Wayne Pearce were next in line for low net awards. In "B" flight Bob Drummond recorded the low gross score of 80. He was followed by Gabby Mol, Al Taylor, Jim Campbell and Ron Breen. Dennis Rowe 's 68 was the low net score. Next came John Morgan, Fred Wells, Jerry MacLean and Ken Varley. PatJoyntfired a 94 to lead the "C" flight gross scorers. In order came Bill Gilfillan, Don Lee, Ron Heywood and Jim Scott.
