T -A • hoto Similar to area schools, the Exeter Minor Hockey Association is grappling with the problem of declining enrolment and increased costs. Bob Whiteford, who took over the presidency of the EMHA recently from Brian McLelland who resigned due to business reasons, said this week that the ice time bill for minor hockey at the rec centre this coming season is estimated at $12,200, based on an hourly rate of ;27.50. Last year 160 boys registered for hockey as the numbers have been declining in recent years. Whiteford said he hoped the same number, or even more would sign up during registration this Saturday. To meet the increased ice cost, registration this year will be $70 for all players. That's an increase of $5 over last yeatfor travel teams and up $30 for houseleague players. There's a $20 trial period fee for first time registrants. In noting the increase for houseleague, the EMHA president said the houseleague players get as much ice time as travel teams, and in some cases get more, and it was felt all players should pay the same fee. Whiteford also reported that plans are underway to put the Exeter Hawks on their own this year, to end the periodic complaint that the juniors eat up a large share of the EMHA budget. A booster club will be formed and the junior organization will be • responsible for their own financing with an initial assistrrce from EMHA. The Hawks willthe continue to be part of the EMHA from an organizational stand- point. At Saturday's registration, players will be required to pay only half the fee and the LIEURY BANTAMS WIN — Lieury won the 'A' championship of the annual Usborne ban- ta boys fastbalt tournament held Monday at Kirkton. T -A photo Win 14th game Cosmos capture title Outstanding play by Henri DeBruyr.. Tom Rolph and Tim McAllister helped the Exeter Cosmos to their 14th win in atom division soccer play. The game against Lucan 2 was played under ideal con- ditions. The Exeter team had most of the attack throughout the game. They opened the score on a solo ef- fort by Henri DeBruyn in the first half and were stopped the rest of the half by some good defensive work by the Lucas backs. - In the second half it was again Henri DeBruyn with an excellent effort to bring the score to 2-0. Lucan however did not give up and had one chase stopped by the crowbar. About 10 minutes before the end Graham Arthur put the icing on the cake for the Cosmos by converting a pass from Henri DeBruyn into a goal bringing the final score to 3-0. There is one week left in atom division play. The Cosmos will play inNairnand the Exeter Whitecaps play the Exeter Blizzard. A win or a tie will give the Cosmos the division title. The only team will be a threat to that title is the Exeter R'hitecaps who are two points behind. Optimism for girl cagers By Matt McClure On the bulletin board in the gymnasium the note reads "Senior girls basketball team goals" and underneath in smaller letters "1st H -P season" 1st H -P playoffs, Advance to WOSSA Semi- fianls tat least)". At practice, Tuesday night, the usually skeptical coach Terry O'Rourke was brimming with optimism. "We're in as good a position to win Huron -Perth as any other team", said O'Rourke. With five returnees from last year's H -P finalist team and six graduates from the junior WOSSA semi- finalist squad, he feels that this year's group has "the potential to be a good team." The team, which started practice last Monday, will have two competent ball handlers 'in the persons of Ronnalee Bogart and Maja Gans. Under the basket, Lori Brand, Cindy Down and Faye Gaiser will lead a strong rebounding corps. As in past years, in order to compensate for a lack of height, aggressive play is being emphasized. Experience is another weakness the team will have. To deal with this problem, the team has un- dertaken an ambitious schedule of more than 20 games. Included among these games is participation in the prestigious Purple and White Invitational, Sep- tember 25 and 26 at Western, against some of the best teams in the province. The girls will get their first test, however in a controlled scrimmage at home tomorrow against London Lucas. Exeter Lanes are now open for the coming season.
