No changes at Pinery
Motorcycles still banned
It is highly unlikely that
motorcycles will be admitted
into Pinery Park this year.
Despite a strong lobby of
bikers who are asking the
Ministry of Natural
Resources to do away with
the 10 year old motorcycle
ban, no changes will be made
in the near future.
Pinery spokesman Terry
Crabe explained that
Pinery's motorcycle ban is
entrenched in the provincial
parks act, and would require
an act of parliament to
change the ruling. "It's not
going to happen overnight,"
Crabe added.
He said that any changes
in the motorcycle ban would
take some time, and he
didn't expect anything to
take place this summer.
Thirty members of the
Bikers' Rights Organization
met Tuesday with Ministry
of Natural Resources of-
ficials at the Chatham
district office.
Acting district manager
Wendy McNabb and Pinery
superintendent Jim Bass
met with the motorcyclists to
hear their requests. Ms.
McNabb said the views of
other users of the Pinery will
be sought, possibly through a
questionnaire, and lifting of
the ban may be considered.
The motorcycle ban was
brought into effect 10 years
ago to protect Pinery's
fragile sand dunes. Bikes
were being run throughout
the park, damaging the
environment. Also at that
time there were some
problems with rowdyism
among motorcycle gangs.
Crabe added that there
were difficulties before the
ban with motorcycles en-
tering the park through the
bush, rather than going
through the main gate.
Crabe says that now the
provincial parks act contains
a law to control off -road use
of motorcycles. He said that
motorcyclists operating off
the main roads face sub-
stancial fines, in other
provincial parks.
Pinery is the only
provincial park in Ontario
with a motorcycle ban.

should have the respect for peers and adults, sincerity, be well
mannered, polite and sportsmanlike, and be in grade six or
under to promote citizenship at an early age. Academic
achievement was not a factor. Presenting the award to Deb-
bie is Lioness Brenda Heist. " Staff photo
