An enjoyable game
Sunday's exhibition ladies fastball game between
two Milverton teams provided an interesting two
hours of entertainment for a good crowd which was in
attendance
The game was sponsored by the Exeter minor ball
association and the organizers including Bill Rowe and
Gary Birmingham are to be congratulated for putting
on a good show.
The game provided plenty of interest for local
tans as two girls on each team are orovere originally
from the area.
Two members of recent Kirkton midget cham-
pionship teams are solid performers of the Milverton
Millwrights junior club.
They are Patti Down and Sheila Penhale. Down
pitched the entire nine innings for the Millwrights
while Penhale turned in a good effort at third base.
In the Suns lineup were' two- of their veteran
players. Lynne Farquhar and Iris Marshall. Lynne
who is the current recreation director for the township
of Stephen was in centre field while Iris, a doctor in
the Toronto area patrolled right field.
.An interesting confrontation arose every time
Marshall came to the plate. She is an aunt of pitcher
Patti Down.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Marshall were in from Grand
Bend to watch their daughter and granddaughter in
action.
The Canadian junior girls championships are being
held in Milverton this year from August 4 to 9 and the
Millwrights will be in action as the host team. The
tournament is being sponsored by Softball Ontario.
More good action
We took in a portion of the annual Lucan Irish
men's fastball tournament in Lucan Saturday and saw
a lot of exciting action and a very good brand of ball.
The Lucan Irish won the 'B' title by defeating Ex-
eter Saveway 8-0 in the final while London Abouttown
Cab took the 'A' championship with a close win over
Baird Lumber of St. Marys.
In a morning game, Brian Hodgins of Exeter
Saveway pitched a no hit game to get his team into the
final.
The 'A' final produced an unusual double play. The
first London batter in the sixth inning singled and set
up a bunt situation. The St. Marys first and third
basemen converged on the plate within about 10 feet
anticipating, the bunt.
The batter did lay down the bunt. It took one
bounce to first baseman Doug Kennedy who fired to se-
cond where the shortstop was covering and he im-
mediately relayed to first base where the second
sacker had hustled to and it was a double play.
Most twin killings on bunts come on pop ups and
this type of double play doesn't happen very often.
Same old Argos
We were in attendance at the opening game of the
season of the Toronto Argonauts at CNE Stadium
•Thursday night and it looks as if it could be another
long term for the Double Blue.
A lot of fans were grumbling on the way out.
Comments such as 'Same old Argos,' 'Here we go
again' and 'What else is new?', were quite common.
One of our neighbours at the game who has been
coming faithfully to see the argos for more than 20
years told us this would be his last year if the team
didn't improve.
Well. an overall look at the game would indicate
the Argos have improved somewhat, but, then the op-
position came from the Saskatchewan Roughriders
who have had plenty of their own problems in recent
years.
We would hope that Toronto coach Willie Wood
gives his backup quarterback Tom Rozantz more
chances to play in future games.
Rozantz carne in to replace starter Condredge
Holoway late in the second quarter and he responded
with three good completions, but, time ran out as he
moved his team down to the Roughriders 20 yard line.
That was the last we saw of the rookie signal caller.
Saskatchewan's new coach Joe Feragalli gave his
two quarterbacks .John Hufnagel and Joe Barnes equal
time. Feragalli who spent a number of years as offen-
sive co-ordinator in Winnipeg and Edmonton has had
quite a job in picking out 35 players for his regular
squad. He had 120 new players to take a look at.
While the Argos only lost by one point 19-18 they
were fortunate to he that close. In the first half they
gave the opposition enough chances to chalk up at least
40 points, but, they al§oedrere hampered by giveaways.
Remember the baseball song. 'Take me out to the
ball gaine- and b y me peanuts and crackerjack'. Well,
it's geffing pretty expensive to enjoy peanuts at CNE
Stadium. For one dollar we received a bag with`28
peanuts'in the shell.
Canadian Sports Gallery
A Canadian Sports Gallery has been added next to
the Hockey Hall of Faroe at CNE Stadium and we had
a quick look through while waiting for the gates to
open Thursday night.
Included in the displays are lawn bowls which are
more than 150 years old, the uniform worn by Tony
Golah of the Ottawa Roughriders in the 1930's, Torchy
Peden's CCM bicycle used for racing in 1938 and a 1917
Remington Standard typewriter used by sportswriter
)~Amer 'Fergy' Ferguson..
