Report from SHDAMH...
The goal of the Ontario
Association for the Mentally
Retarded is "that retarded
people live in a state of
dignity, share in all elements
of living in the community
and have the opportunity to
participate effectively."
In order to attain this goal,
the South Huron and District
Association for the Mentally
Handicapped sponsors the
following services: Huron
Hope Nursery, ARC
Industries, South Huron
Bakery, Residential and
Support Services.
• This year, three new
positions have been
developed to assist in
community integration of
mentally retarded persons.
The job placement officer
helps the handicapped
person to find a community
job and then provides
followup once they are
working. The marketing
and sales Representative
distibutes foods and ad-
vertises services that are
available from ARC
Industries and South Huron
Bakery. The public
Education and awareness
co-ordinator is available to
speak to groups about the
Association's services and
on the prevention of mental
retardation. -
F'our athletes from ARC
Industries are busy training
for the Canadian Special
Olympics on July 16 in
Ottawa.
The Association's Annual
meeting was held at South
Huron Recreation Centre on
June 17. At this meeting, 47
International Year of
Disabled Person's Logo pins
were sold. The proceeds go
to help sponsor our athletes.
Five students have been
hired to assist with summer
programs -at ARC Industries
and the Nursery School.
These students are spon-
sored on short term projects
by Summer Canada and
John Labatts Ltd.
